cheap accomodation in or near Heidelberg?
Hello everybody,
I'm going to Heidelberg for the weekend with a friend. The idea is to spend one night in Heidelberg and maybe another one in some little town up the river. Any recommendation for cheap accomodations?
Also, what are the must see for one day in Heidelberg and one day driving around in the surrounding areas? or is train better instead?
Thanks!

Hi Matt,
I'd like to help with your request but it's kind of hard: How much is cheap to you? It also depend on whether you want to stay in the Altstadt.
There's a youth hostel:
http://www.jugendherberge.de/html/ju...jh.jsp?IDJH=10
E-Mail: [email protected]
Otherwise one very good idea is to go to Heidelberg's tourism site
www.cvb-heidelberg.de
or get in touch with the people directly:
Hotel Reservation Tel.: +49 (0) 62 21 14 22 24, , Fax: +49 (0) 62 21 14 22 22 , Email: [email protected]
open hours: mon-thu 9 am - 17 pm, Fri 9 am - 14 pm
The Heidelberg site will give you lots of things to do. Plus search this forum's archive.
A nice thing to do in the area would be in Schwetzingen the castle gardens.
The automobile and technical museum in Sinsheim (newest item is a Concorde plane) http://www.technik-museum.de/endex.html

If you can read German check this site:
<www.neckargemuend.de/Freizeit.htm>
There are cheaper hotel rooms with breakfast for 23E per person up to 30E per person available.
This is an attractive small town some ten kilometres up river from Heidelberg.
Another place you could try is Neckarsteinach, which is another seven or eight km further on. It is smaller but boasts four castles. Rooms here are cheaper again, but there are only a couple of hotels here as against seven or eight in Neckargemuend.
I can't help with 'must-sees', as I don't really believe in them. I know I enjoyed the castle at Heidelberg and the walk over the bridge to the other side of the river. A drive along the Neckar through the towns I mentioned as far as Eberbach is interesting. Schwetzingen to the west has a very fine chateau. To the south is Leimen which is Boris Becker's home town. But it hasn't got much to of interest for the tourist.

We stayed at Hotel Cental in May. $65.00 night. It is about 2 blocks from the train station. Private bath and breakfast. The breakfast was really good. Hotel wasn't fancy but was clean, nice reception area. About the only other people that spoke English other then us were the people at the desk. For what we paid we thought it was a good value. They had a little wine bar and we enjoyed a glass of wine at night. We made our reservations through hrs.de with no deposit to hold the room.
