We went to Tomar many years ago. I think this advice still holds true:
It has the most intricate Manueline architecture of almost any place in Portugal, and worth seeing,
Our friend who lived in Lisbon told us that when we got hungry at mid-day, we should follow the crowd. Wherever most people are going for lunch is where you should go.
We did. It was a little place by a river at the edge of a park, and all we did was order "whatever they're having." which turned out to be the freshest grilled fish I ever had, with a salad dressed with Portuguese olive oil, which is very very light, and some Vinho Verde. HEAVEN.
That's all I can tell you about Tomar but it was a long time ago. That whole route from Lisbon north taking the road thru Tomar was one of our best drives to date.
I know you will enjoy it! Bon voyage.
