You know and I know and everybody knows there is not the slightest problems with using mobile phones on aircraft; other than the fact the plane is moving so fast that it might be difficult to hold onto a signal for very long.
Remember the United flight on 11 September? Many passengers got info on what was going on with their mobile phones as well as the stewqardess on the first AA flight speaking to control.
Seems to me the airlines are just looking for a way to make another buck or 2.
Of course, you probably couldn't use them on trans Atlantic flights anyway.
Incidentally many of the American airlines have eased up very much on the use of mobile phones on landing. I know I was on several America West flights recently and as part of the landing spiel, you know "Welcome to Las Vegas where the local time is ...You may now use your mobile phones." etc.

TopMan, surely you're kidding. Have you ever heard anyone use a phone of any type on a plane and NOT shout?
I loved that on some trains in the UK, they now have "Quiet Cars". You are not allowed to sit in them if you even have a cell phone!

Although I'm sure technology will "advance" to make it possible, cell phones pretty much won't work well on a plane at cruising altitude. I've been on chartered flights and the pilots didn't care whether you left your phone on because it didn't interfere with navigation equipment and the phone just didn't work.
