My mistake, there is a recorded history of the entry/exits of an individual, however, it is kept for 48hours only.

By the way, there will be an anonymous, non-resident Navigo pass. By 2012, even T tickets should be phased out, so there is a need for such a Navigo pass. But there will be a (small) fee for it.

no no inside source. read this in a UK rail mag that is usually very good on anything to do with rail. but that was some time ago and can't reference and of course is an unconfirmed thing. that's why i hedged...i could not quote exactly. just wanted to bring up the spector that such a pass may not be available to tourists at some time.
I think someone would have heard of it so i'm thinking now the situation will remain unchanged until the new pass at least. hopefully as this is one of the great bargains in travel.

"It should be noted that a single ticket 't' is valid for the entire Métro network, regardless of zone."
Robespierre, is a "t" ticket the regular Metro ticket you would buy in a Carnet? And, will that get you to Versailles? And, is each ticket good for just one trip from your entry point on the system to your exit? Like, here in DC, the Metro has "Farecards" and the cost is different for each ride depending on where you get on and where you plan to get off. You have to put the correct amount on your Farecard, otherwise you wind up having to add money at your destination stop.
My wife and I are planning to use Metro just to move around Paris except for one day trip to Versailles. We were thinking about getting the Carte Orange for Zones 1 & 2, then buying a ticket (would it be a "T"?) for the trip to Versailles. But now I'm wondering if it makes more sense just to buy a Carnet (book of 10 tickets) to start and then another if we think we'll need it. Thoughts?

OH, and of course if you put a little too much money on your DC Metro Farecard, you wind up with one that has 5 or 10 cents on it! I have a whole desk drawer full of those!

A T ticket is good for the entire metro system, which does NOT reach Versailles. The RER reaches Versailles, zone 4, so you need the appropriate ticket for that destination. A r/t ticket is roughly 5-6euro.

A T ticket is what comes in a carnet (that's just a set of 10 tickets). One ticket is good for any rides until you exit the subway system entirely. Or good for one bus ride only.

The only way to figure out whether you want a C.O. is to crunch numbers and estimate how many trips per day you might take. It's a pretty good deal at 16E/Mon-Sun. The rates info is found at:
www.ratp.fr ("titres et tariffs" or something like that).

Davebrad, you sometimes have to add fare to an RER ticket, also, if it's not enough. But the "t" ticket definitely isn't enough for Versailles. Just ask the metro clerk for a ticket to Versailles, they'll sell you the right amount.

I live in DC also, but why do you keep buying new tickets and leaving small amounts on your old ones? Don't you know that you can always put an old ticket in the machine and have it apply that amount to a new one when you buy the new one?

Hi, Christina!
Yeah, I know I can plug them back in, but I ride Metro so infrequently (work in Old Town and live in Springfield, so it's a short drive) that if I do need to use Metro (to go downtown for a meeting or hockey game or something) I always forget to grab my old Farecards!
You know, they say the memory is the first thing to go!
Thanks for the feedback on the RER tix and all your other advice...I've read a lot of your posts and you've really helped me a lot!
