Car rental in Provence

Does anyone know if I can pick up a car from Avignon and drop it off in Marseille? I would appreciate if you can also share some co mpanies who offer the best value.

Thanks in advance.

Give SIXT a try - their rates are usually pretty good

Of course you can pick one up in Avignon & drop it in Marseille. We've done drop-offs in different locations around 50 times in France. We rent from Autoeurope/kemwel

www.kemwel.com
www.autoeurope.com

They are the same rental agencey (brokers in the US) - but usually kemwel has better rates for France.

I've done that, of course. I always use Autoeurope or Kemwel for Provence.

remember a small car is best for seeing the small villages and diesel and hand shift are less expensive.

Hand-shift is not only less expensive, but most of the time you can't get an automatic. If you really need one of those, a large airport is your best bet.

There is no reason to use a car for transport in Avignon. Use it to get to places OUTSIDE of Avignon.

My wife & I have spent 18 weeks vacationing in Provence and another 16 weeks in the Cote d'Azur. I have an itinerary that I've e-mailed to around 3,000 people on Fodors (really). If you would like a copy, e-mail me at [email protected] & I'll attach a copy to the reply e-mail.

With regard to Avignon, park outside the old walls of the city. there are several open lots along the walls, if you see a space, grab it and then walk in. There is a parking garage at Les Halles within the city but frankly the streets are crowded, frought with one ways and by the time you park in a garage you could have parked outside the walls, walk in and a had a nice glass of wine. There is also another gargae that you can access by travelling counter clockwise around the city - it's by the bridge a Pope's Palace... I just mess up every time I try to get to it and go the wrong way....So I don't even try....

I really would not suggest you be driving around in the center of Avignon, why on earth would you do that. You can't drive in some places and it would be very difficult in others. Now of course you can drive okay around the edge and some other areas. If you are picking up that care at the train station, for example, that's on the edge and I assume you would just leave.

One other thing - I really did not enjoy driving in Marseillle. We dropped a car at the train station and found that getting to the right spot for the drop was a huge pain - took almost an hour... I'd look to drop outside the city or at the airport.

We dropped off a car at the Marseille airport & it was quite easy.
