Thanks everyone..I will do some more checking. Nice is much too far away for us on this trip but it is a good idea..

Caroline: Yes..I will be in London for 3 (!!) nights in mid-May. We are not staying with my sister in the LUXURY apartment, but with a friend who lives in the area of Barbican:

Here is the play info:

ps...Caroline: If you have time to read a small part of the long Ischia thread that I started, could you comment on the base issue..I am leaning towards Forio..I will top it now..

Update: I ended up switching to a no-deductible rate; this cost me about 15 euro more than the one with deductible.

So the message here, again, is to shop around and remember that AE US can book cars via their European affiliates.

If you choose to do this, you will be charged in euros. Payment is at time of booking, unless otherwise arranged, and is fully refundable in case you cancel.

CPG: Update: I investigated pricing for an automatic for next month in Italy.

*AE's best price online is over $900USD for one week.

*Kemwell online was also close to $1,000.

*I called AutoEurope, and was offered a Lancia Musa, from SicilyByCar, for $675.

*I mentioned that the AE Italian site offers a Peugot automatic, from EuropCar, for 375 Euro, or about $450US.

*AutoEurope's telephone operator then matched that price. We will have a deductible of about 1,000Euro in cae of accident, but he told me that I can buy "superCDW" that will eliminate the deductable, for about 10 euro per day, when we pick up the car.

Not sure if I should buy the "super CDW" or not--can anyone give me the pros and cons (apart from the cost) of buying this per diem coverage?

eks - thanks for the update. I called AE last week and they told me that rates for next May aren't available until the end of Sept. I asked about AE.it and they said the rates are the same - I'm not so sure about that. Doesn't our own auto insurance cover anything like it does on domestic rentals? I'm totally confused about all the options online.

CPG: The rates are definitely NOT the same from site to site, with AutoEurope. There is a difference of hundreds of euros for the automatic category that I just booked. The glitch is that you have to phone them several times and keep insisting because they will try to dissuade you from booking on the foreign sites. But you will prevail if you insist, and sometimes you can get lucky and get it done on the first phone call.

I called my own car insurer last year and they told me that they do not cover me abroad..

I just looked at the Italian site and was able to see the rates for next May; I tried Pisa since I did not remember where you were flying into..try it and see--or give me your date/locations and I will try it for you...

There is also an www.Autoeurope.eu site, in English.
