Car hire in Turkey

Just got back from Turkey, drove from Cappadocia to Antalya. My advice:

-check car for damage at the time you pick it up and have them note it. Every car in Turkey seems to have some kind of damage

-bring a good map

-make sure your credit card covers CDW in Turkey specifically and if not take the CDW insurance and the optional insurance to cover windshields, tires, etc. We had a flat tire and we also got sideswiped by a bus in Antalya

-avoid driving in larger cities if possible. Driving in Istanbul would be nuts, Antalya was also pretty bad. The streets in the cities are not well marked

-avoid driving at night

-best price I found was with Budget. Hertz, Avis and Europacar are also in Turkey.

We rented from AutoEurope. One of the advantages was that they could set up a pick up with one company in Keyseri and let us drop off with another company in Kusadasi. No one else seemed to be able to do that. Another advantage was a low price.
Driving is a breeze. Although we never drove in or near Istanbul, all the driving in the rest of the country was easy -- well marked, good roads, etc.

Budget let us pick up and drop in different locations for no additional charge. We picked up in Kayseri and dropped off in Antalya.

Budget also picked us up at the airport in Kayseri as the rental office is downtown. I found a slightly lower rate at Budget than at AutoEurope, perhaps because we were renting for less than a week.

Driving outside the cities didn't seem to be any more difficult than other places we've rented in Europe but driving in Antalya was pretty stressful. And the drive from Konya to Side was through the mountains so definitely do not do it in the dark and give yourself plenty of time if you're going that way.
