Cannaregio area?

I am considering staying at a hotel in the Cannaregio area. Anyone familiar with the area and is it close to everything?

I guess it depends on where the hotel is located within that area. It is perhaps my favorite area of Venice for walking because it is relatively remote. However, the outer edges of Cannaregio get much more crowded and touristy, especially around the train station. If you are staying near the Grand Canal, you can easily just hop on a vaporetto to get to San Marco and other areas.

dan is right-it depends on where the hotel is in Cannaregio. The train station is about as far as you can get from some of the main sights and still be in the old city. That said, Venice isn't really all that big, so it's not like your a vast distance away no matter where you stay.

I stayed in Cannaregio for 2 weeks this past December. The Antico Doge
is at the far end of Cannerregio that is closest to Rialto & San Marco. I looked up the hotel site and am actually familiar with the location . I passed it, or under it nearly every day. It is in very busy area & street.
This area kinda of connection Cannareggio with the San Marco district. Its not very far from the Rialto bridge a tad further to San Marco. You realy are centraly located.
If outside nnoise bothers you may want to enquire as to how good the hotel's soundproffing is. Since there's no cars its just pedestrian noise. It is also between the 2 main shopping drags of Cana & San M. .
Plenty o restuarants around and water bus & tragehetto stops.

Enjoy.

We stayed at Casa Martini, by the Guglie bridge, in this area and were very happy with our choice. On a previous visit had stayed closer to San Marco but I would book at Casa Martini again. Our hosts sent us to several good, small restaurants on back canals that we never would have discovered ourselves. We enjoyed the locals feel of this area and visiting the nearby Ghetto. It was not too near the train station, but close enough to be within convenient walking distance. We were close to a couple vaporetto stops, but we ended up walking almost everywhere (however, we like to walk!) Felt like we got to know another side of Venice.

I stayed at the Antico Doge last March and highly recommend it. It's in a very convenient location, about a 10 minute walk to the Rialto Bridge. If you do a search you will find mostly very positive comments on this hotel.
