Camping in Santorini?
We are a small family on a multi year RTW trip in Barcelona now planning our time in Greece and Turkey.
We travel by small RV ( van sized tho taller for the bed on top...Rimor) and will ferry there from Venice ( after ferrying to Italy and a quick trip to Venice).
I know where we will camp outside of Athens, but I am looking for more info about camping in Santorini. I know they take vans and vehicles but I am trying to decide whether to book accomodations there or camp. Will our tall van sized RV fit there on the roads and campsite? How hard will it be to drive there?
How expensive are the ferry costs?
I need to compare my options. We just left Morocco ( which we did without the RV) and I am always researching travel,so the more BTDT info I get the better as my time is limited.
We plan to be there starting in May ( we will move as soon as I get a plan going).
Thanks so much!

I may be mistaken, but I'm not aware of any campgrounds or RV parks on Santorini that accomodate campers/RVs/vehicles. You'll need to find out-of-the-way areas to park at night. And don't expect to find an RV sewage dumpsite.
As far as a tall van being a problem driving on the roads, it won't. You should be able to get ferry costs from this website: http://www.greekferries.gr/.

Thank you Brotherleelove,
This is the place my book mentions:
http://www.santorinicamping.gr/english/index.htm
Which I am sure you know about. My book does say it is primarily a tent camp site, but says there are a few places with electricity for vans.
I just found their site and notice that there is no mention of that on their site so I am writing to them.
It sounds like you are saying there is free camping there without hassles. I thought it was illegal in Greece plus we prefer the security of a campground.
I am glad to know that the height will not be a problem. It is sometimes hard to make these decisions before one has been in the country.
It was so easy to make our itinerary for Turkey, but I find it harder for Greece ( maybe because I want to see everything
).
Thanks for the ferry site!

I'm not saying "without hassles" as it is not legal and I don't know if anyone will complain or not if they spot a camper parked somwhere out of the way. Your best chance for avoiding trouble will be away from the main beach areas. There's an unpaved secondary road between Imerovigli and Oia where there is little if any development. I'm thinking this might be a good area to park, as there are some open areas and parking for the beaches along that stretch of road. The problem for camping this way is that there are no public showers (chronic water shortage) and very few public toilet facilities on the island. If you do go to the area I've suggested you'll be fairly close to Oia, and there is a public toilet at the bus square.
Thinking about it, if you park after dark you can probably stay overnight in some of the village public parking areas but you'd have to keep a low profile. The very presence of an RV will draw attention to you.

Thanks again. I did just hear from that camping site in Fira and they say they do have sites with electricity and we are welcome with our vehicle. It looks pretty posh with showers and pool and good location plus security all night, so we will probably take that route.
I still have to add up costs ofcourse with the ferrys and all,but it is sounding promising.
I would like to splurge one night in a to die for place with great view on Santorini ( hopefuly in the 100..under 200 euro range) while there.
Could you suggest such a place?
Here is our website, so that you know we are not flakes. As you see by the violin concert in the Sahara, we would love to find a great spot for a violin video for my 6yo. We are doing a take off of the where the hell is Matt youtube as we travel to cool places.

Wow, I'm impressed. More families should do what you're doing!
That's good news about Santorini Camping.
A good place with pool and requisite caldera view in Oia is Volcano's Villas, and for less money and a different sea view check the Anemomilos Hotel. There's a caldera 'overlook' in Oia on the site of the old Oia Byzantine castle which might be a good spot for your video. It's high up on the cliff so you'd have the caldera as a backdrop.

THANKS SO MUCH Brotherleelove!!!
We spent the last ten days camping in Santorini and just looooved it and we also did a night at Volcano villa and Looooved that and the view was the best I have seen in my life and so peaceful. Perfect!!
We ended up doing the violin video on the caldera at the Volcano villa as it was easiest and a spectacularly beautiful day.
Let me tell you that the ride up the hill from the ferry in an old RV is pretty thrilling and now I see why it is not regularly done ( altho we have seen a few including one camped down the road from Volcano villa with an awesome view.)
We are loving Greece and looking forward to Crete, Rhodes, samos, Mykonos and more things on the mainland. It will be hard to leave this country and these people !!
Any ideas on places to stay in Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos? We will be only a night or two at each and would like a budget lodging that is as nice and secial as possible.
