Cambridge, England: The Crown Plaza Hotel

Downing Street
CB2 3DT Cambridge
United Kingdom

Any feedback on this hotel? Our plan is to spend part of the Christmas holiday with family and need a place to stay that is close to the train station.

Other suggestions are gladly welcomed.

Thank you.

Thanks, Mark. It's okay for a couple of nights. Maybe we'll move on to London after that.

It's been two years since I was there, but it's pretty much what you would expect from a Crown. Nice - clean - very friendly, really good concierge and bell service. I typically find it a bit expensive...

Thank you, celticdreams. I haven't done the conversion yet (I try to avoid doing that for fear of not going!)

We'd like to stay in London a few nights, but highly doubt we will be able to use Marriott rewards during this time period. Oh well.

I've just spent about 3 days reviewing all the hotels in the city center. I almost booked the Crowne, but found and settled on the Hotel du Vin. Both hotels look great (upscale, modern, clean) but the HdV has better rates and a bit more character to it. I was quoted £230 per night at the Crowne and £155 at HdV.

Also, I can recommend a great hotel in London, the K+K Hotel George in Earls Court. The breakfast is fantastic (be sure to have breakfast included in your rate). They're a block from the tube. Call the hotel direct to get the best rate.

The Hotel du Vin has only been open for a couple of months and looks nice from the outside - I walk past it on my way home from work most nights. Nice restaurant too, again from the outside. The Crowne Plaza is right next door to the new Robert Sayle department store...that will be closed on Christmas Day though.
