Anyone know anything about the Abbey Court Hotel in London? It's near Hyde Park.

It gets good reviews and I always see their ads in the brochures that the BTA sends out.

No, I haven't stayed there...but my last trip I was thinking about it (so I did all the research) The rooms look GORGEOUS -and I've read a lot of good reviews.

In the end though, I just couldn't bring myself to pay so much for just a single. (If you are married or with a significant other though, it may be well worth it!)

I just booked it rather impulsively for 1 week with a friend and it's our first trip to the UK.

I was wondering if it is quiet being on a large road and near the station.

Pemdbridge Gardens is the side road behind Pembridge Rd (the main road, which would be noisy). I don't think there would be a lot of through traffic, but you can't rule out the possibility of people slamming car doors late at night, and that sort of thing.

Thanks so much, Patrick. As long as I have your attention, for a first-time 10 day visit to London from Sept. 20-30, do you think one should basically see the town and just do day trips? Bath, Brighton, Stonehenge, etc. I tried to book a hotel in Brighton for a few nights (having a romanticized idea of what it's like though it's probably more like Atlantic City in the States) and couldn't find one anywhere. It does seem that though that London itself could easily take weeks to absorb.

For everyone's information, there are two Abbey Court Hotels in London within less than a mile from each other. One is in Sussex Gardens near Paddington Station and the other quite nice one is in Pembridge Gardens in Kensington. I made my reservation with the one in Sussex Gardens on the internet. So take care of what you think you're booking.

Libby, I hesitate to offer advice on what you might or might not like to do. Brighton is a big, traditionally brash seaside resort, but also a student town and with a lot of Regency houses as well - chief among them the Royal Pavilion (built by George IV, a preposterous Liberace of a king) - it's a glorious mish-mash of over-the-top chinoiserie and vaguely Mogul style. There's also upmarket antique-ing available in The Lanes as well as the usual seaside jollity on the pier and promenade.

It strikes me as a good idea to get out of London on one or two days if the weather's right and you feel like a trip (and there are plenty of ideas on the board), but equally there is plenty to keep you busy in London as well.

I had no idea there were TWO Abbey Court Hotels ... but you are correct. WOW! I am so glad I gave you the website of the nice one! The 2 hotels are the difference between night and day!

The Sussex Gardens one has www.abbeycourt.com. I don't know anything about it, but it doesn't exactly look like a doss-house (don't care for the strange-looking sculpture in the lobby though).

Thanks all for your help with the two Abbeys! I'm looking into some other hotels as I have time to cancel the first. And will probably take day trips to Brighton, Bath, etc.

I have stayed at the Abbey Court Hotel on Sussex Gardens and I would not do it again. The single is tiny with a twin bed, no elevator, up several flights, no help with bags. I think the most off putting was that the day person was really nasty.

It is a very basic budget hotel.

Is one called Abbey Court and the other Abbey Court Hotel? - I mean, how do people distinguish between the two?!

I had absolutely NO IDEA that there were 2 - they have to be owned by different people, they are so different!

When I first answered this thread, I only knew of the very nice one ... What if everyone was thinking you meant the other one and tried to talk you out of it?! It is kind of funny!!

ggnga, from looking at their website - it does look like one of those type places. I was burned badly from a "budget hotel" (I hear you, never again!)
