Cafe Sacher is part of the Hotel Sacher - the shop selling Sacher Torte on the corner part of the hotel too.

yes I have a whole selection of cafes to try. Thanks all for your opinions. I leave next Wed! Not sure if I'll go to Cafe Sacher just for the old world atmosphere or not! I'll let you all know on my return

I have been there 2 months ago and i really liked it. You should definitely give it a try.

Actually, if you talk to some pastry chefs and history buffs in Baden, they'll say that the original Sacher recipe was stolen from the grandmother of the so-called "inventor" -- that it was really HER cake.
I side with the "dry and tasteless" crowd. And my favorite pastry place in Vienna is Cafe Oberlaa. Although, to date, the CoselPalais in Dresden beats them all.

Based on our experience earlier this month, I still suggest skipping the Sacher torte. Instead try one of the newer confectioners who aren't merely resting on their laurels. For example, we had an absolutely delicious white chocolate/salted caramel pastry at Kussmaul, a new restaurant in the Spittelberg area. We also tried some other new pastries. Nothing wrong with the old tried and true pastries, but it's refreshing to see what the new creative chefs are coming up with.

Not a must-do but certainly not a waste. I went and thought it was a cool place to spend a small bit of time in and share a piece of cake. I recommend going to Demel's and comparing the two or just grabbing coffee in a random cafe and observing life in Vienna for a couple of hours.
