Buy this book! (well, not actually a plug... but rather a list of Europe travel book recommendations for Christmas gift-giving)...
In fact, I don't care if you buy it or not... you can do as I did, and just spend a half hour looking at it... while you're at the place I gravitate to the most, on my Christmas shopping expeditions... the bookstore (Barnes & Noble, in this case).
The book is Provencal Escapes... and it's like a quick fix, for (virtually) all "Euro-dites", I would think!

Savor and salivate...
Anyone else have new book finds?
Best wishes,
Rex

Now I want to read a book I bought my aunt for Christmas called Love in the Driest Season. It is about a journalist and his family in Zimbabwe and their attempts to adopt there. It is both about the country and about them.... guess I'll have to get another copy.

Rex, if that's the fodor's book "Escape to Provence," photographed by Owen Franklin text by Nanct Coons. It is a wonderful book that I give to friends going to Provence for the first time. It came out in 2000. Beautiful pictures and right on where to stay, dine and see.

My Christmas list includes "France, A Love Story" and "Italy, A Love Story", both edited by Camile Cusuamano, and "Italy, Out of Hand" and "Paris, Out of Hand", both edited by Barbara Hodgson. Also, "1000 Places to see before you die".

Isabel, on the basis that no-one ever gives me what I want (and my husband has a rule that if you ask for it you can't have it), I bought myself 100 places- and it's a terrific resource. Food for fantasy

How 'bout we dust off this old thread for Christmas 2007 gift ideas - - and make it not just books this year?
My first nomination would be the DVD "Paris je t'aime" - - if you watched only the last segment, I feel certain you will be touched if you have a soft spot anywhere at all in your heart for Europe travel. It captures the best of what's laughable/ludicrous and wonderful/inspirational in the passion that "we" share for all experiences on the other side of the Atlantic.
Oh, and can I make a specific plea for ideas in the vein of Sicily books to go on Christmas lists? I've already found Pauline's list "Slow Travel Sicily" on amazon - - and I have heard of "The Stone Boudoir" as well.
Any films that capture Sicily?
Happy shopping to all.

I'm giving "Paris Changing" to a friend with whom I traveled to Paris in Oct. It's Atget's photographs of Paris, early in the 20th century, along with more recent photos of the same images. It was reviewed in NYT, and I'm ordering it from Amazon, sight unseen. Here's hoping it's good.

Rex - I second the "Stone Boudoir", it was a great book about Sicily. In fact, when we went there after reading it I insisted we visit the villages and I'm really glad we did. They are in the interior, and it gave us a chance to check out the part of Sicily I don't think most people get to. Other than the day we did those villages we did spend most of our time on the coasts but seeing the interior made me fell like I saw all of Sicily/the "real" Sicily. Not as beautiful as the coast, but definitly worth doing.
There was a great movie I watched before we went also but I can't remember the name of it. If and when I do remember it I'll let you know.
