1,000 Places To See Before You Die

I've thumbed through this book in the bookstore and it looks interesting... includes places I've been to and wholeheartedly agree one must see. Wondering if anyone has this book and is it worth purchasing?

Lucky03-I was given this book as a Christmas present-it is wonderful!!! Read the reviews on Amazon.com to determine whether or not you want to buy the book or not. I love checking off the places as I go to them.

Purchased this book for hubby last Christmas. Names on a lot of interresting places I didn't even know existed, and fun, historic, hotels/attractions to explore in each city all over the world.

I agree with the other posters (except the first reply) - it's pretty interesting, decent amount of info.

I bought it and I'm glad I did. It's a fun read. I don't think I'd take it as much of a travel guide.

A lot of the sites listed are pretty well known, as you'd expect - the Pyramids, etc. And a lot of sort of what seems to be the author's preferences for resorts, B&B's and such. I guess you'd expect that. Not sure all of them are musts before you buy the farm.

Just out of curiosity, I checked what she had down for my home state - Missouri - not in anyone's book as a hotbed of tourist activity. I wouldn't have been surprised to see nothing on it, although I'd like to think there were at least a couple of places as cool a B&B somewhere. A few things she could have picked from in MO were the Ozarks; the Gateway Arch, the worlds largest cave system; the Jesse James, Mark Twain, Pony Express and Civil War historic sites; or the first European settlement west of the Mississippi. Granted, none of that would compare with California, Florida or Hawaii. But apparently, she felt that the one site in the state worth listing was a BBQ restaurant in Kansas City.

Am I bitter? Naw...

I'd wonder about the choices she made in other places I haven't been though.

Clifton - I with you on the Missouri entry...a BBQ place?

The book is interesting, but not very consistent in scope. There will be an entry for a single B&B or site such as Mark Twain's home, then there will be "Kauai," or "Maui," or "London."

I would say it's a mildly interesting read if you are interested in travel all over the globe.

It's a book I tend to dip into every now and then and read a few pages of an area I want to read about. I don't find it something that would make a very good cover-to-cover read.
