We visited several wineries outside of Beaune, but based in the city we also took a walk to the Patriarche family gigantic winery...and were most impressed. Maybe that's because we were literally the only visitors at the time, which resuted in a private tour and tasting (October). They claim "3 million bottles of wine on the wall"...tour and tasting admission is a reasonable €10.

You can walk there from anywhere in the city. We stayed at The Athanor, a very comfortable and centrally located establishment at around €100. If you're driving, free all day/night parking is two short blocks away from the hotel..and very convenient to the routes out of town for your day trips to other wine villages. We also took in several very welcoming wineries in the Pommard-Meursault-La Rochepot area.

We are in Burgundy right now - the towns are can't miss...just make sure you are driving/biking through the towns of the Cote de Beaune to see the truly magical villages...we really enjoyed our tour of Chateau Pommard 21630 Pommard. It is one of those places that is swank, elegant, yet very hospitable (we are very 'Joe Average' people and would never be confused with anyone swank or elegant...yet we felt perfectly at ease.) If you're feeling a little 'splurg-y' time your visit so that you can take advantage of the wonderful lunch that is served on the terrace (or in the dining room)- budget for about 20 to 40 E a person depending on what you order. The tour is terrific as you enter their centuries old cellars and the property is quite beautiful with two permenant installations of Salvador Dali sculptures in the courtyard. Right now until November 21st they have a private collector showing their Picasso pieces (mostly ceramics and engravings and silk screen.) The wine hamlet of Aloxe-Corton is lovely too with many caves to visit. Be sure you drive the scenic route and don't miss the village of La Roche Pot...yet another charming village tucked in the hills but also the location of a small, romantic castle called Chateau de la Rochepot. Nifty. Be sure to go up to the top of the cliffs of the village of Orches and be amazed at the panoramic views that sweep out from this viewpoint.

Do you need a place to stay? Beaune is an interesting city, but it is so much more pleasurable to get into one of the villages to experience the feel of Burgundy. We met a couple who were staying at a newly restored B&B in the town of Nantoux (about 20 minutes from Beaune) and we visited the property in the hopes of staying there...no luck, but the accommodation looked terrific...the name of it was:
Domaine de Combette...you'll have to google it, don't have any idea what it costs. We are staying at a place adjacent to a vineyard called Villa Louise...very nice small hotel with 13 spacious rooms and great bathrooms.

Dijon is a bit difficult to drive now with the works from the tramway but don't miss the historic center!
