Budapest-Cesky Krumlov...Possible?

I know my trusty Fodor friends won't let me down...
We plan to take the train from Budapest to Prague, but since Cesky Krumlov seems in between, is there a way to head there first? (on the way to Prague) Our return flight home departs from Prague.

You should look at schedules on www.bahn.de and see if there is a big difference between first going to Prague by train and then by train or bus (www.idos.cz) to Cesky Krumlov or try to go on your way. I know it's quite difficult to get there anyway but try not to miss it, it's a great place and definitely worth the visit.

If there's a rail line, you can do it, of course.

There won't be any direct line, of course, so try searching for Budapest to Brno, CR, then Brno to Cesky Krumlov (or Ceske Budejovice, which isn't too far away -- I think there is a bus from Ceske Budejovice).

Or Budapest-Vienna, then Vienna to the places in CR (such as Brno or Ceske Budejovice).

It's a bit under 11 hours total, there's usually a two-hour wait or so in Linz where most of the connections will take you for a change of trains.

Check it out at

Looks like a long wait for another train in Ceske Budejovice - you could consider staying there & doing CK as a day trip. I did that, and very much enjoyed CB. Very photogenic main sqaure, and another interesting castle nearby.

Ceske Budejovice isn't very far from Cesky Krumlov, you wouldn't have to stay in CB. There are buses to CK from CB (which are quicker than the train, and the bus station is more central--most people dont' recommend the train to CK)and even a taxi shouldn't be out of th equestion.
