Journey from Prague to Cesky Krumlov - what is the most kid-friendly way?
Hi
I have been reading good things about Cesky Krumlov. We are going to Prague and are keen to go to Cesky Krumlov for 2 days. we don't intend to drive. Most people suggest taking the trip to Cesky Krumlov by bus. HOw difficult it this? We have an aunt and 2 kids (one 4 years and the other 11 months). Generally I try not to travel more than 2 hours at a stretch. Is the bus journey from Prague to Cesky Krumlov a difficult one? Is there a good town to break our journey? Or is there a private bus service between the two towns? Or should I skip Cesky Krumlov and head for somewhere else?

I can't answer your direct questions about the bus trip and presume others will be able to give you some specific responses. But I do have some observations that I hope will be of some assistance. We just got back from visiting Cesky Krumlov 2 weeks ago and absolutely loved it. It's a wonderful medieval city on UNESCO's World Heritage Site and well worth a visit.
We were on a tour with our daughter's high school orchestra (which is another story in and of itself!) and took a private bus. The trip presented no problems fine and the roads were good. I did ask our driver about getting there on your own since we plan to return. He suggested the bus and said the trip was not difficult from Prague (obviously, his opinion). He said it was about 2 - 2.5 hrs. but didn't mention stops etc along the way (I didn't ask him).
As to the historical town itself, it's very compact and easy to explore. You will walk up and down quite a bit since the castle is on a rather steep hill, but we didn't find it particularly difficult. (FYI - the people in our group ranged from teens to their early 70s). The old town down below the castle is fairly level and not difficult to get around at all and had some very nice shops and restaurants.
It was one of the highlights of our trip (also spent time in Germany and Austria) and would put it on our "must see" list.
Hope this gives you some info that will be helpful.

I actually extended my stay in Cesky Krumlov & took some days away from Vienna (OK, I had been to Vienna before). I have put this on here numerous times...from Prague take the train to Ceske Budovice, from there take a taxi the last leg of the trip & have them drop you off in the main square & go straight away to the tourist office. (The train from Ceske Budovice to Cesky Krumlov is a very crowded commuter train that stops frequently) In addition, the train station is a bit of a hike to town.

You can check www.raileurope.com for exact times. It may exceed your 2 hours though as I recall. I know I'm not spelling that right because they is a 'j' in there..maybe Ceske Budojovice (?).

I would NOT look at raileurope website for anything except the price of the passes. Their single ticket prices have not much to do with the reality (at least outside France), and ther schedules miss half the available trains if they are up to date at all.
The railway organisations' websites of the neighbouring countries (such as www.bahn.de, www.oebb.at) have a much better information on schedules than Raileurope.

For what it's worth, it's spelled Ceske Budejovice (and it took me 3 days to learn how to pronounce it!!). You might want to also check on what taxi would cost. C. Krumlov is about 13.5 miles from C. Budejovice and I have no idea what the charge is. Our guide did tell us to agree on a price before you get into a taxi in the Czech Republic - otherwise you can get taken for a ride, literally and figuratively.

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, we have already got the baby rucksack. Instead of going to Cesky Krumlov from Prague we are now thinking of flying into Linz, staying a night and then catch a shuttle bus to Cesky Krumlov from Linz. Apparently it takes only an hour and a half. After that we will proceed to Prague as SAnParis suggests. Thanks again.
