Books for Lyon, Way of St. James and Lot

Yes, I know there are many book threads, but the ones I've found are for Paris and the North of France...maybe I need to improve my search technique? What I would like are recommendations for Lyon, Way of St. James, and the Lot River valley. I particularly like historical fiction, history, mysteries...and yes a good romance. Therefore, any suggestions from "light" to "meaty" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Julie

The Body in the Vestibule by Katherine Hall Page is a (Faith Fairchild) mystery set in Lyons.
A big chunk of David Lodge's Therapy is set on the St. James pilgrimage route

I would google variations of St. James Way, Santiago de Compestela plus books
http://www.csj.org.uk/bibliog.htm
seems to have a lot of suggestions

There are great travelogues on the Way of St. James such as "Travels with my Donkey". Very funny account of a British writer who takes a donkey on the French route of the Way of St. James with sometimes touching, most of the time hilarious results.

Paulo Coelho' first book was "The Pilgrimage" also worth a read. I read this book as well as many others on the Way of St. James in Spanish, but I hear the translation of Coelho's work is good.

Again, I truly encourage you to consider travelogues as a reading genre. I find so many of them are incredibly fascinating.

So, are you planning a trek to any of those locales?? Have fun!!

The Three Rivers of France by Freda White is about the Dordogne.

Shirley MacLaine wrote a book about walking the Way of St. James.

Thought of one more that I really love: A Castle in my Backyard, about Americans buying a home in a village in the Dordogne.

"At Home in France" by Ann Barry is an excellent and moving memoir.

And the two mysteries about the Dordogne by the same author; the first is The Deadly Slipper....

Travels with a Donkey is about Robert Louis Stevenson's trip in the Cevennes

since my earlier post I managed to find the travel book about the pilgrimage route we have in our bookshelves: Off the Road by Jack Hitt, which I remember as quite entertaining.

And I notice I mis-spelled Compostela in my first post.

Thanks for the beginning of my summer reading list. Yes, I do read travelogues and have travelled the world by keeping them at my bedside. Yes, I am headed to all of these places this summer. The current itinerary is Lyon, LePuy-Conques on foot self-guided tour, Lot River Valley doing self-created driving tour, Paris for 5 days, and then following a nephew along the Paris-Brest-Paris randonee bike race. Whew what a month we'll have. I promise a trip report... now I'm off to work then the library to locate some of these suggestions....please send more. Julie

Not a book, but the movie "Lucie Aubrac" takes place in Lyon and is based on her autobiographical novel, which deals with the activities of a Resistance cell during WW II. Good story, excellent acting, and great photography. Lucie died just this past March. Recommend this film.

"Travels with my Donkey" is about Tim Moore's pilgrimage of the Way of St. James accompanied by a donkey. Hilarious book. Quite popular, too.
