Best Wurst in Hamburg?
DH and I will be in Hamburg later this spring. We've traveled in other parts of Germany, (Bavaria and the Rhine) but have never been to the North. DH's ancestry is Bavarian on both sides, so he's wondering where in Hamburg to get his beloved wurst. Anyone familiar with wonderful wurst there?

There is a place right on the harbor waterfront in Hamburg where vendors sell fresh food and other items. Fun place and fresh and cheap. One vendor was throwing out free samples of smoked eel, almost hit me in the face.

Best Wurst:
1. Bratwurst stalls on Moenckebergstr. and Jungfernstieg named Moe-Grill. Their Moe-Wurst is Thuringia style sausage and extremely good. Schinkenwurst is more of a North German variety slightly smoked. Good, too. They also serve good Currywurst and slightly thicker than Frankfurter style Knackwurst.
2. Curryqueen serves award winning Currywurst in the upmarket residential neighbourhood of Eppendorf - fast food in a stylish ambiance.

Best fish:
1. Fischereihafen Restaurant right by the port. Very traditional, slightly formal, but a local institution and has been around for decades, reinventing itself reasonably often. Their lunch specials are extremely good value.

2. More down-to-earth is Fischerhaus, also a local institution by the port, which serves unpretentious but tasty fresh fish. Their plaice Finkenwerder style (fried in butter with bacon) with potato salad is very dependable. More of a lunch place in my opinion. And: locals would probably prefer the slightly shabbier downstairs section, whereas tourists would enjoy the view from the newer upstairs restaurant.

3. Fish and chips or some decent fresh fried fish in the city center can be had from Daniel Wischer with one bistro/takeaway style outfit on Spitaler Str. and a more traditional, but still very informal restaurant on Steinstr. Good quality, but nothing special, still good after decades of serving the city.

Addition to the "Best Wurst" category:
Arthur Hunger's tiny take-away shop at Gruener Jaeger No. 14 in the Schanzenviertel neighbourhood in St. Pauli, just to the left of the HypoVereinsbank branch looks pretty shabby, but arguably serves the finest Currywurst around. While typically accompanied by French Fries, they hate that combination here and will serve the sausage with potato salad or a roll. Do not argue with the woman who has been serving these sausages for 40 years or more.

Thanks all. I've printed out the suggestions above and am grateful for your replies. The best wurst in Germany up to this point was from a take-away stand at the market at the base of the cathedral in Freiburg.
Jaja, I was wondering if anyone would pick up on "best wurst."

Best fish:
Of course Fischereihafen Restaurant.
They have a less formal susidiary, "Die Fischküche", also near the harbour, Kajen 12. Their website is currently inactive. www.die-fischkueche.de
Best regional & seamen's cuisine:
Old Commercial Room, www.oldcommercialroom.de
Their labskaus is particularly good, but turbot in lobster sauce is not bad either.
Best oysters (since 1760):
Cölln's Austernstuben, an art nouveau jewel, elegant
www.coellns-restaurant.de
Guten Appetit!

Out of interest, because it it is being brought up so often: Why would Fischkueche be a subsidiary of Fischereihafen Restaurant? Fischereihafen Restaurant is run by the Kowalke family, Fischkueche by Karin Brahm. As far as I am aware there is no connection between the 2 restaurants any longer (Kowalke may have assisted in establishing the place at the beginning of the 90ies). I could be wrong, just would like to know.
And I hate to disagree on the Old Commercial Room which I consider as only slightly better than a tourist trap.

I WOULD LIKE THE SECOND "hsv" on Mar 9, 10 at 3:04pm RECOMMENDATION - HE GOT IT RIGHT WITH THE "MöGrill"!!!!!!!!!!!! These two more "upscale" hot-dog stands are located opposite each other just outside the "Mönckebergstrasse" U3 Underground station, at a small cross road called "Barkhof", in the center of Hamburg's shopping area (half way between City Hall and the main Rail station = Hauptbahnhof). They have absolutely most fantsatic "Thüringer Bratwurst" and "Schinkenbratwurst"... long and slim with a flavor that'll blow your mind!!!!
They may be a bit pricy but worth every penny. My Canadian born wife and son DEVOURED 7 (!!) of these delicious Wurstchen between the two of them, while I added a further 4 for myself... back in Canada, WHEN WE THINK WURST, WE THINK "MöGrill", NOTHING ELSE !!!!
