Best Way of getting around Amalfi Coast?

Hello,
I am planning a trip and this is how it looks so far;

Naples - Ravello
Ravello-Positano
Positano-Capri
Capri-Sorrento

Then I would somehow like to go from Sorrento and visit pompei and vesuvius, but I will only have one day and lots of luggage. So I am thinking I need to go Sorrento-Naples, check into a hotel, drop my bags, then head over to pompei, no? It is a little out of the way but I think that may be the only way to do it.

Can someone please tell me the best form of transportation to get from one city to another? We are not renting a car so I'm a little concerned.

Thanks!

aos,

You need to tell us:

When are you going?
How many days/nights do you have?
Are you planning on staying overnight at each town?

Why "lots of luggage"? The less you take, the happier you will be - I can guarantee it.

Well we will have about 5 bags. Just standard stuff we need for a 14 day trip.

Arrive Naples 8/30, immidiately going to Ravello, Hotel Graal for 3 nights (till Sept 3).

Sept 3, arrive in Positano, staying at Villa Gabrisa 3 nights.

Sept 6, arrive in Capri, staying at La Minerva 3 nights.

Sept 9, arrive in Sorrento, staying I don't know where yet 2 nights.

Sept 11, leave Sorrento and head north to pompei, vesuvius, etc. Stay in Naples 1 night.

Sept 12, fly home!

I don't see why you don't stay the third day in Sorrento and then do the day trip to Pompeii, very close to Sorrento via Circumvesuviana trains, and to Vesuvius, then catch the train Sorrento-Naples - these trains start around 5am weekdays so you could be in Naples in an hour - why stay one night in Naples - that i don't quite understand, especially with your luggage situation.

I have to fly home on the 12th, and my flight leave out of Naples at 10AM. Therefore I have to do pompei and vesuvius on the 11th. Since it is closer to Naples, and since there is the Naples pizzafest going on, and since I don't want to have to walke up too early in the AM to get to the airport, that is why I want to stay in Naples the last night.

Pompeii is mid-point between Sorrento and Naples.

So, in theory it doesn't matter if you go to Pompeii from Sorrento, return to Sorrento to pick up your luggage and then train to Naples. Or go from Sorrento to Naples, check in to your hotel and then return to Pompeii.

I guess you should consider how far your hotel is from the train in Sorrento and Naples. The one that's closer would make me lean in that direction.

Also, are you the type of person to get up early and head from Sorrento to Naples. If you're the kind of person who won't get to the station before 11AM, then I would lean toward leaving my luggage in Sorrento and returning for it.

Hi AO,

>Well we will have about 5 bags. Just standard stuff we need for a 14 day trip.<

OH MY LORD!!!!!!!!!

Sorry. :-s

I think the best way for you to get to Ravello is to take the train to Salerno.

From there you can take the scenic route by ferry - about 3 blks SW of the train station - or the SITA bus to Amalfi. From there you take the bus to Ravello.

See www.trenitalia.com for train schedules.

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):
See http://tinyurl.com/j4ufa

The alternative is a bus from Naples airport to Sorrento and the SITA bus to Amalfi.

PS,

Use the SITA bus from Ravello to Positano and the ferry to/from Capri.

Your idea of dropping you bags at a hotel in Naples before going to Pompeii is OK as long as you start early in the morning.

Ira - do you know how far the SITA bus along the Amalfi is from the Salerno train station? Or does it serve the station?

It's a couple of blocks from the SITA Salerno stop to the Salerno Train Station.

I wouldn't want to do it with all that luggage. Would stick to taxis or private cars with 5 bags. Will add significantly to budget, tho.

You can easily take a train from Sorrento to do a day trip to Pompei. As a matter of fact you could most likely visit all the other areas by bus/train from Sorrento (except Capri-stay their at least 2 days)...Also-I reccommend doing a full day guided tour at Pompei! I tried to cheap out & use the self guided recorded tour phones they rent...NOT easy at all to follow!! You will not know what your looking at!...Lastly check to see what days the Archialogical Museum in Naples is open! I missed it due to bad communication!!! It houses most of the beautiful findings from Pompei that must be kept in a museum to be preserved! HAVE A GREAT TRIP!

Best way to get around the Amalfi for you would be to hire a van and driver for your use. This might not be the least expensive way of doing things but if you insist on taking lots of baggage it would be the most convenient.

Thanks for all of your input. The voyage on mass transportation does not sound fun. So I'm thinknig of hiring a car service from Naples to Ravello.

Now from Ravell to positano, how do I get there?

From positano I heard there was a ferry to Capri.

Ferry back from Capri to Sorrento.

And then I was thinking hire a car again or take the train into Naples (assuming I do pompei while in Sorrento).

What say you? If anyone ha recommendations for car hire, please let me know thanks!

This is my recommendation for a driver on the Amalfi Coast. We have known this family for the past six years, and used their services. They are extremely nice and reliable:

Ravello to Positano can be done by SITA bus or taxi.

There are ferries from Positano to Capri, but you should know that they can be cancelled even on a perfectly sunny day if there are rough water conditions. We've had it happen twice, and it was pretty annoying!

Ferry/hydrofoil service from Sorrento is much more reliable.

For a driver from Sorrento to Naples, I'd highly recommend Giovanni Gargiulo of tourofitaly.com. We've used him many times for day trips ( incl. one from Sorrento to Pompeii on our way to Rome) and been really pleased with him.

If he's unavailable, you could also try Francesco Marrapese at: [email protected]. He's a poster here who started his own business in and around the Amalfi Coast.

Both of these drivers are based in Sorrento.

Good luck!
