Best way from Rome FCO to Amalfi Coast

Does anyone have experience with taking a train from Rome to Positano? We are going in August and prefer not to rent a car that we will most likely not use the 3 days we are there. The cost to park for 3 days near our hotel will be approx. 100 Euro ... plus the car rental charge and drop off fee (at Naples Airport).

You take the train from termini station in Rome to Naples then transfer at the train station in Naples to the circumvesuviana train which will leave you in sorrento. You can take a bus from there. Or you can take the train all the way to Salerno and take the bus back to Positano. Or hire a driver in Salerno or Naples. There is also a bus from the Naples station to Positano.

If the search function here is working you will find all the information you will need.

if taking the Circumvesuviana, which is under the station at Naples, to Sorrento just but the 180 minute ticket. They will try to sell you all sorts of others but that will get you there.

Rome (airport)

There is a shuttle train that connects the FCO airport to the main train station.
Rome (Termini train station)

Several trains connect Rome to Naples in approximately 2 hours.
Naples (Napoli Centrale train station)

At the main train station in Naples you will be able to board the local "Circumvesuviana" trains. Just follow the signs and walk to the Circumvesuviana platform.

Throughout the day, there are trains for Meta, Sant'Agnello and Sorrento leaving every 30 minutes. The trip takes approximately 1 hour.

In Sorrento you will be able to board the buses operated by the "Sita" company. There are different buses that will take you to the villages in the area:

Piano di Sorrento
Sant'Agnello
Meta
Colli San Pietro
Positano
Praiano
Conca dei Marini
Amalfi

Hope this helps...best of luck!

Hi K,

I suggest taking the express shuttle to Rome TE, the train to Salerno and the ferry from Salerno to Positano.

Much more relaxing and beautiful that the Circumvesuviana out of Naples.

Train schedules are at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):
See http://tinyurl.com/3cbhkb

A limo from Naples train station to Positano will be about 110E.

Enjoy your visit.

I am taking the marozzi bus from Rome Tirbutina station to Positano.

here are 2 posts of mine with some info about that....

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35107505

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35107424

also another option is this bus from naples - http://www.curreriviaggi.it/

also this info is from a hotel's website in Praiano that I have found useful info on:

From Fiumicino airport in Rome there are non-stop sub-way trains which run every hour from 7.38 until 22.08 which can be used to get to Termini railway station. Tickets cost about Euro 8,00 and can be bought from automatic selling machines in either the national or international arrival halls or at railway stations. Tickets are not sold on buses or trains. They may be purchased only at tobacconists, news agents and at the green kiosks located at main bus stops. Underground tickets can also be purchased at the stations. Notice that tickets must always be obliterated when you get in the bus or at the underground station.

SPECIAL TRAIN LEONARDO EXPRESS
Ticket price Euro 8.80

Termini Station-Airport
The “Leonardo Express” train leaves from Roma Termini station every 30 minutes, each day, from 05.52 to 22.52. The train makes no mid-journey stops.
Airport-Termini station
The “Leonardo Express” train leaves from Fiumicino Airport station every 30 minutes, each day, from 06.37 to 23.37. The train makes no mid-journey stops.

Follow this link and fill in the information requested to search for Ferrovie dello Stato (National railways) Rome/Naples - Naples/Rome train arrival and departure times.
Intercity Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) trains (PHONE: 147/888088 toll-free) run every hour between Rome's Stazione Termini and Naples' Stazione Centrale. Intercity trains make the trip in less than two hours. Trains take either the inland route (through Cassino) or go along the coast (via Formia).

I second the vote for a ferry; however, be sure to call your hotel in Positano ahead of time to make arrangements for them to transport your luggage from the ferry docks.

meant to add..... for me the marozzi bus seems the best option. it is a 4 hour bus ride with no need to change at anytime. I don't want to take a train and switch to another train then a ferry or bus. we were going to go straight from rome FCO to positano but decided to rearrange our trip to stay in Rome first then go to Positano first thing in the morning on our 5th day. The bus leaves at 7 am during the time I will be there. It wouldn't have worked for us going striaght from the airport. you still will have to take the leonardo express from the airport to termini station and then go from there to tirbutina station to then get on the bus.
