hi...i might be visiting germany in august or sept. Can you advise which is the best time to visit? i prefer less crowds..what is the season in august and september?

August/September is a good time because chances are high to catch good weather. September is cooler, of course.

Crowds are generally no problem in Germany and if there are crowds (there is always a long line in front of the Reichstag entrance) it is not a matter of season.

Traffic will be better in August because more people are holidaying out of the country. However, on Saturdays, traffic can be terrible on the North-South autobahns due to homecoming travellers.

The "best" season is Christmas, hands down. Nobody decorates and celebrates like the Germans. You'll feel like a little kid again.

Germany is not just one spot on the map. Where in Germany do you intend to go? The north is much different from the south of the country. Big cities are quite different from villages. Since you seem to be going in Aug-Sept, the Christmas recommendation is out. I'd go in Sept and head straight for Munich, then out into the hills and villages of Bavaria.

I agree with Wayne's suggestion. However, the Oktoberfest in Munich starts on September 19. If you want to avoid crowds, stay away from Munich during the latter part of September.

Also the highlight of our trip to Germany was the time we spent on the Mosel River. Cute little towns, quiet lazy river lined with vinyards, Burg Eltz. I recommend it highly

Germany is not only a large country with very different things going on but also different climates. School vacations are also on at different times in the various states.

End of August and beginning of Sept. will get you to a lot of wine festivals all along the Rhein.

If you would like a fun, big festival but without the hype of the Oktoberfest, then come to Frankfurt the last weekend of Aug. for the Museumufer Fest. (Museum Riverbank Fest) Both banks of the river are covered with 20 stages, artwork & craft items for sale, all kinds of international foods, myriad events taking place in all of the museums and around them too, dragon boat races, fireworks, and tons of other stuff. For the last 2 years, over 3 million people have found it worth coming to. It is now one of the premier events in Germany. Frankfurt itself is a great, historical city to visit with wonderful little gems of history scattered all through the city. This WAS the Imperial city where the elections and coronations of the Emperors took place for hundreds of years.

There is also Unification Day on 3 Oct. and there are all kinds of events planned in Berlin especially since this is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall. Berlin is where I would head to instead of Munich. If you want to see a castle or palace you can head over to Potsdam and see San Soucci, which is gorgeous along with the surrounding park and everything in it.
