Best route from Oslo to Bergen?
Hi,
We'll be in Olso in June and want to take a quick side trip out to Bergen. Is it feasible to drive there in a day? What route do you recommend (how are the roads)? Once in Bergen, we'd like to spend a day driving out to the nearby fjords - is this advisable?
Thanks in advance!

The train ride between Oslo and Bergen is supposed to be lovely. It is about 300 miles if I remember correctly and about 7 hours by train. I therefore do not think of it as a quick trip from Oslo. Tried to do that trip three times in my life when I had a Eurail pass. Never made it. Met a girl in Paris once, Copenhagen once and Goteborg once and got sidetracked. Have no idea about driving but I doubt it would be faster than the train.

I also can't answer the road query, but you should be able to do it in a day, considering in June, it's mostly daytime!
I took the train and did the Norway in a Nutshell, where you pack in a nearby fjord along the way -- with that side trip, it takes 12 1/2 hours (all daylight), leaving Oslo at 8 a.m. and arriving in Bergen at 8:30 p.m. Going straight through on the train takes 8 hours. Most people like to do that route overnight and sleep on the train.

I did the Norway in a Nutshell trip last July and it was definitely worthwhile. We stayed overnight at the Stalheim Hotel which was a perfect way to stop and enjoy the gorgeous views after a very hectic days of trains, boat, and bus. There was a lot of rushing to get seats (except for the first train that we had upgraded reserved seats for). The next morning we went on to Bergen and it was much calmer. Do a search here for more info.

The tour is based upon public transport with train, boat and bus and you buy the tickets at the trainstation in Norway. I would recommend staying the night either at Stalheim. The train leaves Oslo at 8 a.m. Most do this tour and it can sometimes feel a little cramped changing to the train to Flam.
One suggestion would be to take the next train at 10 a.m. and instead stay the night in Flam, arriving there at 5 p.m.. Continue to Bergen next morning.
