Piazza Navona is all of 250 meters from the Pantheon. Really worth splitting hairs about.

Piazza del Popolo is much less central than the Pantheon/Piazza Navona area. It is right next to a metro stop, which is useful for getting to some destinations, and it also has become a place of trendy bars and hotel, but it's on the edge of the historic center.

Debated about our Rome location for six months, especially since we are comfortable using mass transportation yet Piazza Navona/Pantheon was very recommended--and it was far from a subway.

I'd never stay elsewhere in Rome. Pantheon/Piazza Navona it is.

Pantheon is most central and the most congested, with the Piazza del Popolo more northerly and far from the Roman ruins and city center. I would recommend staying at Campo di Fiori, right in the middle of the city off the Via dei Fori Imperiali, that feels like you are among the locals in this delightful area that hosts a morning market that has been around since the Middle Ages. We stayed at Albergo della Luneta which was very reasonable. A fabulous place for dinner nearby was "Grappolo d'Oro" (grapes of gold) that was reasonably priced with excellent food and attentive service. Every time I go back to Rome, I stay in the Campo di Fiori area and would recommend it to anyone.
