Brugge is a very small town. There is a very large center square, which is the hub of tourist activity and is ringed by hotels, but I was happier staying just about a five minute walk from that area, just to keep away from the noise and the slightly circusy atmosphere of the Market Square. My hotel was the Jan Brito, and I really enjoyed it, but it doesn't have canal views.
The train station and the Convent area is a solid 25 minutes walk from the center, so don't book a hotel there. Also, the river area (not the canals, but the river) is charming, with its windmills, but it is not where you want to be.
But otherwise, it is hard to go wrong in picking a hotel location in historic Brugge. You can check out reviews on Tripadvisor and see what suits you best.

wren,
We will be staying at the Absoluut Verhulst B & B for two nights in early May. Can you tell me anything else about it or any tips on Brugge?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave, The b&b is great...we arrived by taxi from the train station for 10 euro. Frieda and Benno are wonderful. They will help you with anything you need, such as restaurant suggestions. Be sure to go to the various chocolate shops...they can steer you to those as well! Also, be sure to sample the delicious Belgian beer. We ate a great meal at Den Dijver which I can recommend.

The canal boat ride was very nice and relaxing...the last thing we did that day actually. We climbed the tower in the market square and went to the nearby museum. Brugge is just a really pretty town and you will love the Verhulst B & B.

We stays for 3 night in October 2005 at the Egmond, near the Lake of Love. It was wonderful, nice walk from the train station, they actually have a picture map on their website that you print out and follow. I loved Brugge, it was a 3 day side trip from our Paris trip. I would actually love to go back and stay a week and rent a bike for the week in spring time. I choose the Egmond by posting on trip advisor and was not disappointed.
