My father (56) and I (26) will be traveling to Europe for the first time in Sept- I am an art historian and want to stay in the Montmarte district- any suggestions on the a hotel where we can get the full 'Parisian' experience with low rates???

What a great trip you'll have!
A rather basic suggestion would be to go to hotels.com, expedia.com, travelocity.com and just run a search for Paris hotels. Get an idea of what is out there, what you'd like in a hotel, specific locations and approximate prices. Or, search on "Paris Hotels" on this site to see some suggestions.
Then, the many helpful souls on this board will be glad to chime in some suggestions. Little by little you can narrow down your choices. But do give your budget so everyone can help.

There are probably only a couple decent hotels in Montmartre that will be a Parisian experience, and I really doubt they'll be on Expedia, etc. The ones on Expedia and in tour packages are the large modern chain hotels (or just std modern hotels) in the bad part of Montmartre and Pigalle. Some hotels calling themselves in Montmartre are not, just because folks like you want that name.
I'd suggest the Hotel Ermitage on rue Lamarck, Regyn's Montmartre or the Timhotel Montmartre as about the few I'd consider. FOr more luxury, the Terrasse would be fine, also. Someone on here recently mentioned a hotel that looked pretty nice a little north of place Clichy (I think it was a Best Western), but it did not have very convenient transportation options -- that was the problem, the website claimed it was right near Clichy metro, but it was quite a hike away.
I think that was the Holiday Inn Montmartre on rue Damremont

The hotel looks okay (but not super charming) and the area is nice enough, it's just not that convenient to metro, but there is a bus line running nearby.
I go with one of the others I named, if you can, for some charm. If you want cheapest, that would probably be Ermitage. I don't think it takes credit cards, though. You'll see it mentioned in lots of places as a charming, cute hotel up there (see Frommers, and maybe on Fodors). Here is a description of it in Timeout, as well as the few others worth mentioning.

Hi kyann: Someone on this site mentioned bed&breakast in Paris. If it is of interest to you, check this out:www.bedandbreakfastinparis.com
There are quite a few in the Montmatre area (18th).Some rooms start at 75euro up to 115 depending of the area.
I believe that you would get the full "Parsian" experience as many of the owners are artists, producers,
sculptors ect.
I am lookong into it for my trip in March.
Wising you and your father a marvellous time.

We've stayed in Montmartre several times and in fact, have just returned from a stay at Hotel Regyn's Montmartre.
It's a very nice, well-kept two-star located right on Place des Abbesses. Ask for room 554 and you'll have a fabulous view of the Eiffel Tower. Rate was $104 euros per night; rooms without the Tower view are cheaper.
The Timhotel Montmartre is located just behind Regyn's Montmartre on Place Emile Goudeau. I'm sure it's quieter than being right on Abbesses, plus it's a nice spot for anyone interested in art history--it's right next door to the Bateau Lavoir studios of Picasso and others. It's actually a little pricier than Regyn's Montmartre. They may have some rooms with nice views too (expect to pay a premium for a view).
Another well-kept hotel in a good Montmartre location is the Prima Lepic, right in the midst of the rue Lepic market (but still just off rue des Abbesses). Not sure what their rates are these days (we paid the equivalent of $64 USD, but that was a few years ago, when the dollar was strong). Make sure you ask for one of their renovated rooms.
Hope this helps--we love Montmartre; hope you will too.

The Timhotel will be of great interest to an historian: years ago it was called Hotel Paradis, and the first two floors rented by the hour. The top floor (they now have an elevator) offers great rooftop views of Paris. JP
