Had great flights in April and May from Chicago to Heathrow. I guess one could handle anything for eight hours, if necessary. My fare was good, attendants were experienced, very helpful and accommodating and food was decent. Of course, free drinks didn't hurt anything. Good T.V. selections, although that is not too important to me as I read the entire time. Overall, very pleasant experience both ways. We chose the middle seats which worked out well as we had only two of us in the three seats. Seemed far more people took the window side and left the middle seats open. Worked for us.

Drinks are not free on Delta or American in coach, even on transatlantic flights--I think they cost about $5--though I could be wrong--husband won't fly coach for this far so we always upgrade.

It depends on where you are flying from!

I hate to change planes but we only have direct access to London..so my choice here is BA or Virgin..I take BA ..Vigin is nice but FULL of groups with kiddies wired up for Disney!

My first choice would always be AA for other destinations..just because of the extra inches..but we have also been pleased with Delta.
Another reason I like AA is you can upgrade any ticket, even cheap bookings with FF points...most other airlines only upgrade on full fare tickets.

I flew BA in November the seats were small. American to Paris in January had noticably roomier seats, I am sure the configuration is the dsame for London.

I am glad to see that there are a few people who are not Virgin fans. While you can have bad flights on any airline, the systemic problems with Virgin are what appear to be older, more decayed aircraft, a generally lax attitude and poor seating layout. While the seat pitch may be as bad in BA, some seats such as the bulkhead leave you with your knees up in your chin the whole flight. The provision of five dollars worth of drugstore crap in a bag somehow does not compensate for the inconvenience and lack of professionalism. This airline really demonstrates a triumph of marketing over the discrimination of the consumer.

Continental was horrible for me, but for a trip my fiance took he loved it (he had his own tv screen).

Air Canada was nice (and drinks were free).

I also vote for BA

These are all trips to Scotland though from the US.

To London I flew EasyJet out of Scotland

I'm another one in the "don't care for Virgin Atlantic" camp, flew them to London last year and was not impressed. But regarding alcohol on international flights - it's always been free when I've flown, even on American but that was in 1994 so maybe they started charging sometime after that? However jet lag experts advise against imbibing while flying because it dehydrates you - if you're traveling with some one who hates flying perhaps a mild sedative would be better than booze.

But in any case my criteria is the best cost and most convenient schedule. I loved Air New Zealand when I flew them in 1999 but since then their fares seems to be a lot higher than VA, BA and AA. I WON'T book a flight that require a plane change, it's a long enough trip from L.A. without adding a plane change en route.
