Beer Hall in Berlin

I'll be in Berlin this coming Sunday and Monday. I want to take my college-aged son to the greatest beer hall in Berlin. Any ideas?

ttt is to the top -- when your message is languishing at the bottom of the pile helpful people sometimes use ttt to get it back on top.

Sorry, but a beer hall in a protestant country sounds REALLY funny. They "hate" Bavarians up there. You could try a "Weisse with raspberry" at some restaurants.

I just returned from Berlin and had wonderful dark beer on tap at a local pub called Dicke Wirtin on Savigny Platz, the prettiest square in Charlottenburg. The owner is very welcoming and the atmosphere is lively, but like most informal places, gets very smoky from about 7:00PM on. You can get great beer and atmosphere at almost any "kniepe" (pub) outside Mitte - the fancy center of town. Lonely Planet and Time Out guides to Berlin have reliable advice for less formal eating and drinking options.

Thanks, everyone, for your help! Now I get it (and the "ttt&quot! I'll just look for at the pubs, (if that), as we're headed for Prague and Vienna, and there will be plenty of beer...!

LynnLee,

there are quite a no. of good brews North of Bavaria, too. It's just that the places people drink them do not sport the Bavarian folklore (unless they are tourist traps).

logos,

nah - we don't hate Bavarians, we just like to take some fun out of you, just as you guys do of us Northerners (and being based in Munich currently for a few months, I know what I am talking about ;-) ). BTW care for a drink after work some time in the next few weeks? My office is smack-dab in the center of town.

Bavaria is otherwise known as "the Bible Belt" in Germany and there probably isn't a lot of love lost between some folks in Berlin and Munich..whole different outlook and attitude as you are about to learn.

P.S.; I think you and your son will thoroughly enjoy all that Berlin has to offer..but try to tear yourself away from Mitte while you're there.

Thx for the input on regional characteristics. I grew up in the Southern US, have lived in NE and NW, so I understand the difference between the Bible Belt and the rest of the country! Looking forward to experiencing with my son this part of Europe. Nothing like it in US. Love the history and of course the architecture.

Fortunately, the German "bible belt" isn't baptist, and still has excellent beers, just not the typical "beer hall" style.
