I am travelling to Mallorca or Majorca in a couple of weeks. I really dont mind where I stay but would like to be able to be close to a beach as I adore swimming in the sea. Would love to hear any views on the best beaches in Mallorca - but not in places like Santa Ponsa etc.

I was in Mallorca in May2003...and I just love the island.

We stayed in the Alcudia area, and if your main interest is swimming...this would be the place for you. It's about 15km (?) of white sand beach. Alcudia is about 1hour by car from Palma.

We are planning a trip back to Mallorca, but this time, we will stay closer to Palma to discover more of the city. The last time, we took a daytrip from Alcudia and managed to see only half of Palma.

If you prefer a more cozy beach, I hear that Cala d'Or can be wonderful.

p.s. I know of a great Mallorcan restaurant which is reasonable and fantastic. We actually dined 4 of the 7 days there. Let me know if this is of interest to you. I will try to find the telephone number.

Let me know if you need more info. We rented a car for 3 days and went around the island. It was great......

I am going to Palma for 4 days and then will be spending an additional 10 days on the north coast and east coast (well a bit inland). I would be very interested to learn about the restaurant you liked so much.
Also, regarding the beaches you visited: Did they have facilities or chairs, food, etc?

i'm from mallorca...so feel free to ask anything!! my favourite beaches are es trenc and cala agulla...es trenc is a "desert" beach, with only two chiringuitos in a 5 km beach...but is absolutely perfect!
cala agulla is on the north-east and maybe the only problem is that is full of germans...not that i have anything aganist germans but i can't speak german so is a bit complicated to communicate!! (the bartenders, the signs, the menus...everything is german)

btw, i'm getting confused with the mallorca/majorca thing...you consider them two different things??? 'cose i always thought majorca was the translation of mallorca to the english (just as we say londres for london)

and fyi mallorca is the island's name, and palma de mallorca the name of the capital city.

I was asking earlier about nightlife in Mallorca. Is there an area where local Mallorcans go to dance and hear music? I'm not so crazy about the loud, super-touristy places. I'm also into art galleries and maybe nature walks (walking tours of the natural environment). Thank you!

Mallorca and Majorca are both nice, but Mallorca is a little bit more Spanish than Majorca, and a bit larger (around 1/7 more).

If you have time, you should check out the nearby twin islands of Minorca and Menorca.

In my mind - Mallorca is the english for Majorca (so they are the same island in fact ) and the smaller island is Menorca..... I put both in the heading so it would reach all audiences .... thanks for the replies .. looking to get accomodation with c. 20 mins drive for Es Trenc. Any views on resturants...in Mallorca

In your initial message you said that you weren't interested in "places like Santa Ponsa etc." - I'm not sure what this means but I'm guessing that you don't want to go to one of the busier "package holiday" resorts.

If this is the case then Alcudia might not be for you either. I have fond memories of Alcudia as it was our first overseas family holiday with the children & it does have a beautiful beach, but if you are going in summer I think you will find it very busy with Northern European visitors - British, German, Dutch etc.

When we there - a few years ago now admittedly - it certainly wasn't as brash as some of the Southern resorts (e.g. Magaluf etc.)& it didn't look like the kind of place which would attract a young, noisy crowd but there were a LOT of families with young children (including ourselves!) Other than the beach,I wouldn't say the place has any great charm.

Not far from Alcudia you'll find Puerto Pollensa, which we visited a couple of times for the day & which might appeal to you more.We felt it was more upscale than Alcudia & had more of a small-town charm - less bustling but still with a good number of shops & restaurants and a very pretty beach.
