Basel Accommodations

My family (7 adults and 3 children) are planning to stay 1 week in Basel, Switzerland in May 2009. Given the large size of our group, does anyone have any suggestions on value-priced accommodations? Given the size of our group, we were wondering if we should look into renting an apartment or house (instead of hotel or bed & breakfast - although if we should stay with hotels and b&bs that would be good info to know as well). We don't all have to stay in the same unit - renting 2 apartments in the same building would be fine. I'm not sure where to start in terms of renting an apartment or house in the area and would appreciate any direction or suggestions on where to start the whole research process. Thanks!

Hi specter,

Well, you should have a wonderful visit, once you get this accommodation problem sorted out!

I can think of two places to get started. The first is Interhome at

www.interhome.com

which has a lot of apartments all over Europe. They have an office in Florida if you'd like to phone them to discuss your stay.

The other option is at Basel's tourism site,

www.basel.com

Just go to "Accommodation," and then to "Other." There is a list of a few apartment houses. I guess you'll have to contact each one, and it'll be a bit of a hassle. But you should be able to find something.

Good luck!

Many of the short term apartments require stays of two weeks or longer and are used primarily by people in town for several weeks for business. For example, I stayed at the Apartmenthaus zum Trillen, which has a 1 month minimum stay.

However, Apartments Elite does allow stays as short as a week, with rates from about 550 to 1250 Sfr per week.

If you opt for a hotel, the Hotel Garni Steinenschanze is a popular moderately priced (for Basel) choice and you might be able to negotiate a group discount. Close to the train station and to the old town. Doesn't win prizes for charm, but it's comfortable, well located and, of course, spotlessly clean.

And if budget is your primary concern, the YMCA is perfectly decent and it's not unusual for families to stay there.

BTilke,

I bookmarked those Elite Apartments -- what a find!! Thank you so much. I expect to be spending some time in Basel over the next few years and had despaired of finding good lodging. Thanks!!!

Enjoy Basel! If your stay is a month or longer, I do highly recommend Apartmenthaus zum Trillen. www.apartmenthaus.com (not .ch)

An unbeatable old town location, just 1.5 blocks from the Marktplatz, overlooking a pretty square with a fountain. The Hotel Basel is practically next door, with its cafe and Sperber jazz bar. If your longstay happens to occur during Fasnacht, it's perfect for seeing the celebration, then heading "home" to catch a nap, shower, etc.

The big pharmas and other Basel companies use it to put up new and short term contract employees, so booking well in advance is recommended.

Alas, no, not so long. Just a pleasure trip and to visit a friend who lives there. I'm getting to the point where I can only stay in a place for one week -- shorter stays just won't do. Ahhh, but maybe someday I'll be able to stay for a month!!

And how I envy you!
