The OP has a disatrous experience and yes is trying to taint the restaurant's reputation on any forum he can and rightly so.

OP - thanks for sharing that so we tourists can stay away fromn this place, whose owner's actions that molkker, another Austrian!, sanction, were so unprofessional as to merit a boycottt.

There is no excuse for the owner's actions, especially with a small child there an no excuse for FodorGarchs without any knowledge of the OP casting accusations that are simply that at OP. But rudeness has become the treatment many first-time (and thus often last-=time) posters get here it seems from FodorGarchs.

I do wonder if on the other boards the OP was immediately encountered by such caustic boorish remarks?

If this happened which I certainly do believe - because no one would take such time to post on multiple forums unless they had had it happen to them.

And if it happened to you would not you be mad as heck too and want to do anything to get back at this cafe's owner simply appalling behaviour - what happened to the client always being right.

Again I'd like to see how the OP was treated on other forums - I bet not a malisciously and scathingly as on this one!

Ek87, I believe that every traveler has experienced rudeness at some point in time, but you must not let that color your memories of a beautiful city like Salzburg. This incident s/b remembered as just a glitch in your trip and not the only story you tell about Salzburg. Put it behind you and remember the good times. And please take this advice in the helpful spirit in which it is given.

It sounds like a nasty experience.

On the other hand, it is always a good idea to ask exactly what is included in a meal, before ordering it. Especially if the meal is for a child or a picky eater.

I work in a cafeteria and I am perfectly willing to remove or add things from the normal menu if I am asked BEFORE I start preparing the meal.

You don't know if your kid will like the sauce? Okay, I'll put the sauce in a separate small plastic mug. You want mashed potatoes instead of fries, okay, as long as you realize it's instant mashed potatoes. You've got allergies? I've got the ingredient lists here.

Sometimes we don't have the things a customer wants, but it is always possible to remove things they don't want. Just ASK FIRST, please.

The problem with internet forums is they are open to abuse. The OP's experience does sound horrible, and for what it is worth I believe it, but it is all too easy to spam assorted travel boards with negative criticism.

If I were to write a similar report, I think I'd be widely believed. I have been posting here for several years, and even if I am a known grump, people would know that I was probably genuine.

what would the motive be? Really - someone who writes flawless American - nope you are rusing to a judgment without knowing diddily - again why would someone go to all the effort on various forums to simply make this up?

No there is no plausible reason except they got terrible service that left them angry as all and I it happened to you or me we would do everything in our power to get back at that jerk as well.

Sounds like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld.

And I too have always experienced decent service in Austria and from Austrians - it could happen anywhere.

We had medicore food in the old town of Salzburg too. Fabulous food, though, off the beaten path.

We experienced poor service at a cafe in the old town but luckily left before ordering. Again, service was very good away from those tourist traps.

It seemed to me that all one had to do is get away from the old town, even just by crossing the river, and everything was just friendlier.

For the Swiss, Austria is an excellent example of hospitality. The Swiss know their own hospitality skills are dismal, especially after visiting their neighbour country. I was quite surprised that oldtown Salzburg didn't live up to usual Austrian hospitality.

Wow - I've always said the 'swiss wrote the book on hospitality' - how to treat tourists - from train conductors who always go out of their way to ask me where I am going and gifve info, etc to every single guesthouse or hostel or camping or hotel I have stayed in - zillions and always felt well treated and got polite treatment.

In no way have I ever found the Swiss to have dismal hospitality skills, quite the contrary.

As a general point, a first time poster on any internet board that registers purely for the purpose of revenge/denigrating a named business is likely to be viewed with suspicion. I believe this to be true, and an explanation of the seeming hostility of some of the replies.

In the case of this specific poster I specified that I believed his story.

So no, I see no contradiction.
