Backpackers in Paris Hotels

We (DH, daughter, and I) will be in Paris in June. My son will be backpacking with a friend for six weeks and joining us for a few days in Paris. We want to stay in a nice (and as yet unchosen) hotel, but not 5 star luxury and wonder how backpackers will be received. I realize it would depend somewhat on the degree of scruffiness of the backpackers and the snootiness of the staff but if anyone has experience in this type of situation please share. Also suggestions for 3* hotels in the 6th in a fun, lively area, doesn't have to be quiet, and with a non-snooty staff! Something like the Artus- which doesn't have availabilty for the all five nights we'll be there. Budget is, say around $300 USD, but flexible. Thank you for your responses.

We need at least two rooms. I was thinking per room when I said $300, but again price is not the most important factor, we'll spend more for a hotel we'll enjoy.

No pun intended, but I wouldn't sweat the backpacking issue. My daughters and I backpacked on the Camino de Santiago in Spain last summer, then took the overnight train to Paris, and checked into the Hotel Monge, 55 rue Monge in the 5th, and it was no problem. You're paying customers with a credit card. They'll be happy to see you, your son, and his backpacking buddy. It's not what you carry, but how you carry yourself that matters.

I don;t think any moderate hotel (or 5* for that matter) is going to worry about what type of luggage your son and his friend have. As long as they're clean and tidy - and don't look as if they will want to party in the hotel room all night - you should have no problem at all.
