Austria- arriving in Hallstatt by train

Perhaps I'm missing something... I know that the train station for Hallstatt is on the east side of the lake. Everything I've read talks about taking a ferry across to the town itself-- but I'll be there in on December 28. I'm guessing the ferry won't be running, or am I wrong about that? If no ferry, how does one get around the lake into town-- by bus? is it walkable (doesn't really look like it on a map)? I'm not finding any info anywhere... help?

The boat runs all year to connect with trains. There's a schedule on www_alt.hallstatt.net/schiffahrt/

Ah... thanks so much. I assumed the lake would freeze, and the ferry would shut down during the winter. Geoff, website is very helpful.

Looking forward to seeing Hallstatt!

One more tip, Jen. Since you are arriving on the train from Attnang-Puchheim, be sure to sit on the right side facing forward. In that way, you will have a really beautiful view of the mountains, the lake, and then Hallstatt on the other side of the lake.
