day trip from hallstatt

Is it possible to make a day trip from Hallstatt to Schafbergspitz near St Wolfgang using only public transport? We will not have a car. Would we need to go from Hallstatt to Salzburg by train, and then to St Wolfgang, or is there a more direct route by train or bus?
Thanks

I think your best bet would be to get either train or bus to Bad Ischl (about an hour by bus, not sure by train), then another bus from there to St Wolfgang (40 mins). Plus add on waiting times in between, but it's still much more direct that via Salzburg.

i did it exactly as nonconformist said

train to Bad Ischl - bus to St Wolfgang and you could do the boat ride across the lake coming or going as well

the steam train leaves from St Wolfgang but check schedules in off-season.

Please tell me about this Schafbergspitz, Hallstatt is my absolute favorite place in the world, next to Montana, and I am always looking for more places to keep secret.

Schafbergspitz is, i believe the name of the mountain peak that rises up from St Wolfgang and the lake

I took a steam train up there to the summit (the spitz i believe) - the Schafbergbahn - and then walked down

the view from the top over the lakes and Salzkammergut is fantastic

the old steam train is fun as well. Runs regularly in season and on weekends but check schedules.
