Athens - opening ceremonies on

In Canada we are getting the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics live right now (1 pm ET). Some beautiful pictures of Athens so far in the preamble. The ceremonies themselves begin around 1:45.
If you live in the US and can get CBC on satellite, you might want to have a look, since you won't get it until this evening on tape delay.

>>>>>>>There were cheers for the Americans, but some gave the delegation the thumbs-down in an apparent show of displeasure for the war in Iraq. Moments later, the Iraqis entered to a roaring ovation.

>>>>>Men from Burundi danced with spears and women from Moldova paraded in hot pink pantsuits. A lone tennis player walked with the flag of Djibouti.<<<<

Everyone could show enthusiasm, but our athletes. We had to tone it down.

That's ok. When I see the first US basketball player slams a dunk in the face of our opponents and then adds a little spice by hanging on the rim, that'll be sweet.

I might become a bigger fan is we could just see the Olympics as a contest of the best athletes in the world, irrespective of nationality. Why should that matter?

Unfortunately for the U.S. team, that's about all they can do, because they sure as hell can't shoot. Of course, for anyone who has watched an NBA game in the past decade, that is no surprise. And neither was the deserved win by Puerto Rico who showed that basketball is, above everything else, still a TEAM game.

I wish NBC's graphic of where each country was located had beeen a bit bigger. I admit that I hadn't heard of several of the countries!

missypie, me too! and I like to think I'm fairly well-informed!

On a more important note, what did you all think of the team uniforms? Clearly, none of the designers contributes here, because pretty much all of the uniforms make the athletes stand out like, well, tourists. What happened to the critical need to blend in?
