They are within one block or so of each other on/just off Snygrou Avenue. Neither of them are as "centrally" located as numerous other hotels.
We stayed at the Marriott several years ago and enjoyed it, but neither it nor the Intercontinental are within easy walking distance of the downtown sites.
I am not certain how far either of these hotels are from the nearest Metro stop.

Just to throw this in here, we stayed at the Hilton Athens in July, we had never stayed in a Hilton before but we were really impressed! Gorgeous new modern very large rooms, beautiful bathrooms with aqua glass, marble, bath and separate shower, glass handbasin. Lovely rooftop restaurant and bar. Taxis are dirt cheap in Athens also.

I've stayed at both the Marriott and the Hilton. I agree with AnnieP, that the Hilton is great and right near a subway stop to get anywhere easily and cheaply. The Marriott is nice but I liked the Hilton better for both the quality of the hotel and its location.

Marriott is about half a mile to a km from the Syngrou-Fix Metro station. Not such a bad walk but not great to do with luggage, even (or especially) with wheels, because the sidewalks are full of parked cars, blocked by construction, or even non-existent. Other than the construction, I doubt anything has changed since May - and likely the construction is still there also.

I was just reminiscing on the Hilton Athens website, and it really is lovely. We did not know though until too late that they have a gorgeous spa downstairs with an amazing glass sided pool. It was E10 for the day and I wish we had availed of it but it was too late. Sauna, relaxation rooms, private pool etc. Treatments are extra of course.

Let me add that even though our stay at the Marriott was pleasnat, etc., i would elect to stay somewhere closer in were I to stay in Athens again.
I have seen the Athens Hilton website and I fully agree that the place has a lot to offer. Of course, there are a lot of people who for whatever reason have decided that all 'chain' hotels are totally devoid of charm, etc., and that any so-called 'American chain hotel' is even MORE devoid of anything you could name. I think that is an unfortunate, if not shortsighted viewpoint about travel but to each their own.
If you are open to changing hotel choices I would also read the reviews of the various Athens hotels on TripAdvisor before making a final decision. You will definitely be closer to the usually-visited things if you stay at the Hilton.

Intrepid1: Very true. We would have never even considered using a Hilton before. But for whatever reason (I think we just had 2 nights and it was the most reasonable at $180 per night) we decided just to "tough it out." It was such a shocker - it was nicer than any "boutique" hotel we have stayed in lately. We paid $500 for a night in 60 Thompson Street in New York and it was a joke compared to this. We had to stay in Hilton Rome Airport on the way back to the U.S. and that did not compare though to Athens. I have been checking them out since, and there is one downtown NYC that looks very nice also, although not for $180 per night!
