Athens Hotel - Herodion or Electra Palace

We are considering these two hotels for a 3-day stay in Athens in late April. Would appreciate any information anyone could provide to help us make our decision. We are two, 50+ year old couples. Thanks for the help.

joysjones - I'm not highjacking this thread, but am interested in comments. We're going in Nov and I keep reading good reviews on both.

I stayed at Electra Palace in 2006, but am personally unfamiliar with Herodion (except what's at their website).

EP has a somewhat better & more convenient location -- directly inside Plaka -- but Herodion looks only 5-10 minute walk south of Plaka. Not a big difference.

The rooms at EP appear nicer and more luxurious than room photos at Herodion, but you will pay at least an extra 30 Euro nightly rate for that luxury.

The EP is very nice, but it is pricey ... speaking for myself, I'd probably prefer to save that 30+ Euro daily difference, especially at today's Dollar-Euro exchange rate.

We stayed at the Electra Palace in late Sept. It was very pricey, but you are paying for the location and view of the acroplos. Close to plaka and we walked to the metro. They advertise a pool, but very small. Room was beautiful and balcony view was amazing. Read reviews for both of your hotel choices on www.tripadvisor.com. I swear by that and that's how I pick hotels. Good luck.

The Herodion was great! The rooms weren't luxury but the service was wonderful and everyone was friendly. The have some great food too! Mmm Cretan Dakos :] It has a wonderfull view of the Acropolis and right across the street from the Plaka.

Our family of 4 stayed in Herodin three years ago during spring break. After checking in, we went to our room and realized it didn't have the view to the Acropolis (I requested that few months before when I made the reservation online) so the manager gave us the choice to offer a room in their sister hotel on the next street. The room was small but had a nice view of the Acropolis with balcony and 3-5 minutes walk to Plaka and the Acroplis entrance. If you make reservation with them try to take a copy with all your requests with you. I hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that the breakfast was included and was excellent.

I considered both those hotels and ended up at EP. The rooms are nice; ours had an Acropolis view and terrace. But the hotel is big and glitzy with lots of tour groups. Staff are not very welcoming. Good location, as noted above.
