Someone on another thread mentioned that the Fodor's people will delete these posts if they come across them. True or not true?
If true, I don't get it. Why is it considered advertising when it is just trying to let other people know about a good deal?

Not true, logas. In the past weeks I've seen several examples of careful editing of threads, removing offensive posts and comments about those, but leaving the rest that could not have been done except by "human" editors.
I've never thought posts about airline specials are deleted if they are made by regular posters here.

wow. that's interesting about cigalechanta's thread. I thought it was so well done and everyone was cautiously not doing any direct advertising. Now I'm wondering if it's Ok to suggest an apartment in Paris that is owned by a stranger since it isn't Ok to mention one owned by a poster here.

I posted twice about special fares last week and both threads are still running.

so, I guess it's not true.

I suppose you could say that any post which potentially generates revenue for another party or entity is "advertising."
Some folks post here simply to advertise one thing or another which isn't usually well-received even though some might say that those are also letting other people kknow about a good deal.
I think what upsets folks is when someone is obviously trying to generate business/revenue for themselves or some entity they have a financial stake in.

I don't think airfare sales posts are considered advertising automatically (although would if it were posted by someone in the company, I suppose), and some posters were just speculating unfairly about things because they don't like it when some object to obvious advertising. Telling someone about a good deal isn't advertising.
Now I didn't see the post mentioned above that was deleted, but listing personal rentals by others on this board does seem like it coule be advertising to me, especially if it were unsolicited or even the start of a thread. This isn't meant to be a forum where people can list their personal businesses to gain clients. I don't see anything wrong with suggesting a good rental you know about to someone asking for something specific, but I can see the fine line that it would be advertising if you initiated a thread touting said rental without being asked.
