Are Legal Documents still needed if traveling abroad with child without father? (he's not on the birth certificate)

A friend and I were traveling with our children years ago in Ireland and had a lot of trouble. Better safe than sorry - take the Birth Certificate and some kind of letter stating that you have sole custody.

kendarina, yes I DO travel with my DD's father's death certificate. So far I have only had to show it once when DD was traveling alone to visit my sister.
In Zurich airport DD was interrogated by the US Airways Agent as to who we were in relation to her, where she had been, why she was in CH, when she came into the country, who she had traveled with, if her father knew where she was....so on and so forth. For a good twenty minutes, I was not allowed to intervene.
As stated before, the questioning was not done by passport control or customs it was done by the airline.
I always take all the necessary precautions as I am aware that my family composition could be a trigger for questioning.
