By the way, Boppard sent me a heavy package of tourist brochures and a large booklet on hotels - I am sure it also contained other types of 'stays' but I didn't pay any attention to them. Send for 'accomodations' at:

If you are willing to go a little farther south, check out:
http://www.hotel-zur-loreley.de/st-g...any/index.html
Click on the English option, then click on "apartments" on the left hand side of the page. In 2000, my husband and I stayed in one of the hotel's apartments (not the one pictured), located in a separate building across the pedestrian walk way. The apartment was huge, clean, airy, inexpensive, typical German breakfast included, and had a wonderful view of the Rhine. It was on the fourth (US equivalent, fifth) floor, requiring lots of steps. I loved to stand at the window and watch the action on the river. Note: the Rhine is a commercial waterway and lots of boats travel during the night, making a location near the river a bit noisy, but worth it IMHO.

Thanks all. We are still looking and will look at all your suggestions, except for turning up and looking around. Usually a good idea and we used to do this but with a small child now I like to have some certainty! We are also considering the Hotel Garni Gunther.

We have left it a bit late to get an apartment including a weekend in September I think. Most of the apartments near to or on the Rhine were already booked, including St Goar. We have booked the Hotel Garni Gunther for our stay.
Thanks again for the advice.
