Currently have two nights reserved in Fussen to tour Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, but looking at canceling and adding two nights to Munich for ease of day trips.

Any reason why I shouldn't?

I live in Garmisch, and Füssen is my favorite town in this area. Its old town is one of the best, its lake is beautiful, it has a real castle in town, and it has a river flowing by. The scenery there is gorgeous.

Do you mean you want to add an additional two nights to Munich, or stay in Munich instead of Fussen for the same two nights?

If the latter, two nights is just one full day and that day would be spent making the trek to Fussen anyway, no?

It's a long day trip from Munich, especially if you're taking a bus tour, or using public transport.

Add two nights to Munich. Here's our current itinerary:

11/23 - arrive in Frankfurt 8:30 a.m. Store bags and head into town for breakfast, Stadl Museum visit, walk around. Early afternoon, take train to Mainz.
11/23-25 - stay 3 nights in Mainz. Potential day trips - Marburg Castle, Cologne, not settled yet.
11/26-28 - stay 3 nights in Freiberg. Day trip to Colmar/Strausbourg (either/or, not and), maybe Sigmaringen Castle?
11/29-30 - stay 2 nights in Fussen
12/1-2 - stay 2 nights in Munich - I'd like to visit Nuremberg and Salzburg, but I'm afraid we won't have any time to see Munich
12/3 - fly home

Again, two nights is only one full day. You'll not have time for both Nuremberg and Salzburg, let alone Munich.

Personally I'm not a fan of day trips like you are planning. If I was going to Munich, I'd spend the time in Munich rather than heading off to another city, or country for the day.

Much more enjoyable to me would be to spend a minimum of 3 nights any one place, and slow down and enjoy experiencing where I am....rather than rushing off so see somewhere else.

But I understand the other style of wanting to see many different places too.. it's just not for me.

Sadly, no, I don't. I've eaten there a few times, but nowhere that was really memorable. However, I'll be overnight in Füssen in about a week (showing my nephew and his girlfriend the area), and I'll be better about picking restaurants.

I'd probably leave the itinerary as-is - but give up the idea of taking a day trip from Munich and just spend the short time you have allocated for Munich in Munich itself. As mentioned, Fuessen and the castles can be done as a day trip from Munich, and that works fine - but on a day trip, you won't have more than a couple hours in Fuessen at the most and no time for the surrounding area. There is a lot to see and do in the area - wonderful hiking, or just walking as mentioned above. And as with most mountainous areas, dawn and dusk are beautiful times to be there, which you'd miss on a day trip.

You're so right. Ugh. And if we stay in Munich four nights, daytripping to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, I won't want to take another day trip to Nuremberg and not see Munich. There's never enough time!

I'm currently double-booked with free cancelation. I'll make a decision soon.

I generally agree. My sister and I spent a week in Vienna and stayed in the city the entire time, which was nice.

My google maps is littered with green flags, I want to see it all, which is completely impossible. Le sigh.
