dlynn: In one day we visited Bonnieux on market day, drove to St. Remy and parked in a large parking lot in the center near a carousel...ate lunch and visited several shops (there are lots of neat ones) then we went to Les Baux and it was awesome. I'd have to say because of the heat I'd recommend starting early as possible in Les Baux, then St. Remy and Pont du Gard. I don't know how long it takes to get to PDG but I think all three are certainly do-able. I'm pretty sure we spent around 3 hours in Les Baux by the time we strolled through the village and climbed to the castle ruins.
Joucas was a neat little surprise as we kind of stumbled on it as we were driving through the area. There were no tourists in sight and it was quiet, very pretty...especially the little church which was very simple and had a folk artsy red heart painted above the pulpit. Village is full of narrow passageways and gorgeous climbing roses.
Villages we visited:
Gordes: (breathtaking photo op from just outside the village... Just a bit from Gordes we visited Abbey de Senanque and it's not to be missed, especially if lavender is in bloom.
Aix: I was not that impressed
Roussillon: Gorgeous village - the
colors are amazing, everyone swoons over our photos of the buildings here.
Vaison la Romaine: Pretty but not at
top of my fav list
Bonnieux: Very pretty,good market,nice
offering of cafes, beautiful view toward La Coste.
St. Remy: Larger village, I liked it way better than Aix.
Les Baux: Don't miss - it's great!
Apt: This was my most favorite market (Saturday) -it was huge and colorful and glorious!
Isle Sur la Sorgue: different from all others, river through it was so lovely, their market was gigantic and included things we had not encountered at other markets.
Menerbes: very tiny village, fun to
stroll through - view from the old church at the end of the village is gorgeous.
I'm jealous - we've been back only 3 weeks and I would go again in a heartbeat -- have a wonderful trip! Oh, and my recommendation is that when renting your vehicle make sure it has decent power as you will be driving up lots and lots of hills...thankfully the Puegeot we got was great but the Fiat we happened to be given in Tuscany was pathetic for the kind of landscape we were driving in.
