Any Backpacking tips???

I am a first time backpacker. Any advice on what size and features to get for a backpack? There are just so many to choose from.

Someone at The NorthFace store told me that warned me that I will not be able to carry big backpacks as a carry-on item on a plane. He also mentioned that I have to put the back pack into a duffle bag or something because of the straps. The straps might get caught in the luggage belt? Please help.

You'll find 20-50 times more info on backpacking on the ThornTree at www.lonelyplanet.com - - not that you aren't welcome here with this, or nay other question.

Just not nearly so many backpacking experienced people here.

Best wishes,

Rex

If the straps are detachable then you won't have to worry about them. However, if you go to where the airports handle larger pieces of luggage, you can have the backpack shrinkwrapped, therefore protecting the straps and the contents of your backpack. Just call the airport in advance to find out where this area is located.

You'll find that when you enter nearly every airport in Europe at your departure you will see passengers standing in line to get both their backpacks and luggage shrinkwrapped. It only costs a few dollars.

I suggest that you go to REI or EMS, if you have one nearby and check with the sales staff. You'll want something that is lightweight, preferably expandable, and that has big straps, including one that wraps around your waist. You'll also one want that is made out of tear resistant nylon, with big zippers. One of the other neat features are the ones that have inline skating wheels on them, so you can pull the backpack.

Most of all, you need to determine how much you will be taking with you, and that will then determine the size of the backpack that you want to buy.

Check out the packing forum at:
www.eurotrip.com/forums

This is my favorite website, and I think it will help you a great deal! It is THE website for backpacking in Europe.
