granitée de foie gras
foie gras crème brulé

They do foie gras creme brulee often. We ate it for the first time there, but have had it other places now as well.

I want to add my vote for lunch at Vieux Logis; the food is quite special.

We have visited Sarlat 3 times; the last time was in ’08. We rented a house just a block outside the circle road for two weeks that trip. Before leaving home I researched for restaurants to try. Some of my research was conducted on Chowhound. Two of the places near Sarlat where we ate are amongst my fondest dinning memories from France. Both were quite different from each other but both were recommended by Carlux. One was Vieux Logis the other was Murat - Chez Jean in Pomarede for Sunday lunch. Vieux Logis was refined and elegant. Chez Jean was simple, perfectly prepared food amongst multi-generational French families out for Sunday lunch – their pommes Sarladais set the benchmark for me. Pomarede is about a 50 km drive from Sarlat; it could be part of a nice Sunday excursion.

We have been to both to La Belle Etoile and Le Recre that were mentioned above. We enjoyed La Belle Etoile very much, twice, over our three visits to the area. Le Recre was OK; what made it more interesting than the food was we had both read and enjoyed “From Here You Can’t See Paris”.

I have faith in recommendations posted by Carlux from both reading what she has posted compared to our experience and then having met her. She managed the house we rented in Sarlat, before her “retirement”. Thank you Carlux, for the tip about Scott E Vest.

It had been a while since I thought of Chez Jeanne – I had the name wrong – so I did a Google search. I found a blog of someone who went for a recent mid-week lunch. The pictures look like it did 4 years ago. http://ourhouseinquercy.blogspot.com...d-le-pont.html

reminds me that we should go there soon. We often go to the nursery in Prayssac, and it's a good excuse to stop there on the way. We enjoy both types of eating here, the fancy, really special meals like the Vieux Logis, or even the St Martial, but just as much the cheap and cheerful that you find all over, like Chez Jeanne.

Yes, GOOD restaurants of both types bring joy.

We have reservations for lunch at Vieux Logis on our anniversary. We may try some of the other suggestions as well. How far in advance do we need to make reservations for Le Grand Bleu or La Gabarre? Thanks.

I heard the Recreation is not as good as the original and I agree driving there at night is wicked.

I write in support of those who have rec. Ch. de la Treyne. I believe the dining room there has some Michelin stars. Food and service of the highest level.

When we were in Sarlat and tried to get dinner reservations at Le Grand Bleu (HIGHLY recommended!!), they were also full BUT we managed to get a Saturday lunch reservations which was excellent. They have a great menu and a very reasonable fixed price, at least for lunch. If you cannot get dinner reservations, definitely try for a lunch. It was one of the best meals we ever had anywhere!!

Thank you all for your suggestion of Vieux Logis for our anniversary lunch. It was marvelous and I remembered to take photos of each course ( with my new camera ). When we return I will post a trip report.

Glad you enjoyed Le Vieux Logis. Still our favourite, and we look forward to our next time there.

Oh please dine at L'Esplanade in Domme.

My husband and I spent our 30th anniversary week in a gite Le Jardin des Amis at Meyrals, close to Sarlat in 2005. The L'Esplande was strongly recommended. The restaurant was highly touted for excellence and a spectacular view. We watched ballooners float by as we indulged in a savory fare.

I have not read any of the other suggestions; I saw your request and needed to jump in immediately.

I hope you throughly immerse yourself in all that is Sarlat and beyond.

Happy anniversary...we too are celebrating ours this Friday the 29th...
