Amsterdam. Where to watch an NFL game?
Hi! I've never been out of the USA for the start of football season and am afraid the withdrawl will kill me. Will I be able to find a sports bar in Amsterdam to watch a game on Sept. 11th? Looking specifically for the Steeler game or the Bucs game but ANY game will do!

In the days when NBC carried football, you could catch an occasional game on CNBC Europe. But those days are gone. Also keep in mind that the late game (that is, the game that begins at 7PM on the east coast) wouldn't start until 1AM Central European time. Having said that, I still don't think you will find any European channel that carries an NFL game. I will be returning from France on Sept 9, in time for opening weekend!

It's been a couple of years, but the sports bar at the Globe Hotel in the Red Light and the Satellite Sports Cafe (by the Bulldog) in the Leidseplein used to be good places. Maybe someone knows of a bar where Amsterdam Admirals players hang out - that would be cool.

Been in a lot of Amsterdam pubs and never seen an American sporting event carried - maybe the SuperBowl or NBA finals - i havn't been there so i wouldn't count on it. That said if any city in Europe, except those in the UK where 'American football' is more popular, had it available it would be Amsterdam. The city is as plugged in as any in the world!

I'm sure it wasn't imagined what I watched at these bars, PalQ. (sure, I had a toke or two beforehand -- but still...) The places I named do carry some US games on one or more of the many satellite-fed screens (or at least, they used to).
As far as the popularity (of American style football) is concerned - you surely know of the NFL-Europe. Glasgow Claymores is the only team in the UK.

Oh, gosh! I stand corrected -- the Claymores are no more:

So there are no teams at all in the UK.

Nimrod - i mean by American football being popular in UK i meant not by teams but enough people there are NFL fans that i think it's carried on some cable channel?
Nimrod - you know the derivation but for others: Nimrod was an adept hunter, from Greek mythology i think and then in Bugs Bunney cartoons Elmer Fudd was called a Nimrod - as sarcastically called that because he was a bumbling hunter and the word came to mean idiot or such. Not inferring anything about your screen name and postings. All of which very un-Nimrodish!

I am not sure you would have access to the internet, but if you do, you might be able to catch a game through live video.
I am a baseball fan and I am already prepared for next season in case I am traveling. MLB.com has live tv and video for most games. You can pay for the season or per game at any time you please.
I am sure the NFL has the same type of deal. Good luck.

Wow. This thread is unbelieveable. Much like my fantasy baseball-obsessed husband whose need to check in, set a lineup and make trades has sent our vacation Internet costs through the roof.
Can't you guys focus on the important things - like shopping? (grin)

Worktowander,
I had a laugh at your post. Once we were in Barcelona during a World Series and my baseball-junkie husband thought he would find a game there b/c afterall it was the WORLD series.
(It was his first trip abroad.)
It's nice to know about the MBL.com.

I live in Europe and get MLB.com but the closest I can come with the NFL is a live radio broadcast. So don't think this is a possibility unless something has changed in 05. I have friends who get UK sattelite which covers some NFL games.
In Amsterdam this summer ( I don't live there), i was walking in the tourist area, where all the restaurants and bars are, i can't remember the name of the area exactly, but I recall seeing a Red Sox versus Yankees game on the big screen
