NorCalif, this is not a normal winter, at east not compared to recent years. Lately winters have been cold and grey and wet. This year we are enjoying a good old fashioned Dutch winter and I am loving it.
It won't last though and I expect we will be longing for this cold sunny weather again once it has warmed up and normal service has been resumed. It is supposed to be back to wet and miserable in the second half of January .

Hetismij - yeah, I was wondering how normal this winter has been. The canals are frozen but right now big bunches of daffodils are blooming alongside them - at least all along the canal at the end of my block! I can never figure out what season it is here...

I love this cold clear weather! -10 celsius last night (here in Belgium). Much preferable to the grey drizzle we have most winters. But it's unusual for it to be this cold.

A waterproof jacket, gore-tex or the kind that you would wear skiing, would be fine. Waterproof with a removable fleece lining would be perfect to take her into spring.
Kids here all wear Ugg-type boots, and mostly short jackets. I'm always trying to get my teens to wear longer coats, but they won't.

Scarve, gloves, hat.

And jeans and sweatshirts. Abercrombie & Fitch type clothes.
Clothes are expensive here, compared to the US; I wouldn't buy too much in Europe.
