Amsterdam to Munich or Berlin?
In June I'll be flying in to Amsterdam and out of Munich. The original plan was to take a train from Amsterdam to Munich with a stop in between. I know that flying between the two would be much faster, but I'd like to see the Rhine valley. After reading through other posts it sounds like there are some interesting spots between Amsterdam and Munich, but nothing that would warrant an overnight stay. (Please someone correct me if I'm missing some wonderful spot - I've never been to Germany). One thought I had was to either fly or train from Amsterdam to Berlin, spend a couple days there and then fly or train to Munich to spend the last 6 days of our trip.

So, my question is: should I stick with the original plan and head south-east through Germany to Munich or head east to Berlin, then down to Munich from there?

Thanks!

OK, so no input on that one? Well, let me simplify - we've decided to go Amsterdam to Munich, but would really like to stop over for one night in between. Any thoughts on stopping in Koblenz or maybe somewhere in the Black Forest (Freiburg?) on our way down to Munich?

Thanks!

I'm partial to Freiburg and Berlin but I would advise against both, the former because it is out of the way and the latter because you don't have enough time. Wurzburg and Rothenburg would be better stops on your way to Munich, the latter town a day trip from Wurzburg. Or go straight to Munich and take a day trip to Neuschwanstein, which is pure kitsch.

Certainly not Koblenz, the only grey Prussian town in the whole valley. But towns south of there are indeed delightful. Sonthe question is, would you like a third big city, Berlin, or a change of mood in a handsome baroque town, south of Koblenz ?

Amsterdam to Berlin as an overnight journey is not as good as it was: nowadays you must change in Duisburg before you get to bed

[email protected]
Thank you very much for all of the replies. Sorry if my question was a bit confusing. We are going to Amsterdam, Munich and Berlin. We've got 15 days. The question wasn't whether to do Berlin or Munich, but rather which route to take: Ams > Munich > Berlin or Ams > Berlin > Munich. I think we've decided to go Ams > Munich > Berlin. So, the second part of my question was to find an interesting place or two to stop between Ams > Munich and Munich > Berlin. I thought Koblenz because it's the half way point between Ams and Munich. I was also thinking Freiburg because my husband wants to see the Black Forest.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Steph - I did not respond to your original post because you stated that nothing between Amsterdam and Munich warranted an overnight stay so a hop off then back on the next train would hardly be warranted. Now that I know you have 15 days I would certainly recommend at least an overnight on your way to Munich. As your major destinations seem to be the big cities, I would recommend a stop over in a smaller town to experience the "real" Germany. I would consider Boppard and St.Goar in the Rhine valley, or Rothenburg, Wurzburg, or Bamberg. Freiburg, though a delightful city, is a little out of your way and is NOT the Black Forest. To enjoy the forest you must visit one of the smaller towns and put on some hiking boots. I am sure in your travels you will find many sites that warrant an overnight stay. Enjoy!

Thank you very much for the replies. I think we'll take a look at staying in one of the towns mentioned by CharlieB on our way down to Munich. I do have a follow up question on the Black Forest. Is it a day-trip destination from Munich? We'd like to try and fit a visit to the Black Forest into our itinerary.

Steph - sorry, but there are no direct trains from Munich to Freiburg - you must change in either Karlsruhe or Mannheim and a one way trip takes 4+ to 5 hours. Check out the German Railways site at "www.bahn.de" and by clicking on "Int. Guests" you will get the English version - it is intuitive from there. You can even find hotels within a specific radius from your destination bahnhof! Once you have a proposed itinerary post again and I am sure you will find more help.
