Amsterdam to Bruge - Car or Train?

We will be in Holland for Christmas staying with my cousin and her family and thought it would be nice to take them to Brugge for New Years eve. Can anyone tell me the most efficient way of getting to Brugge from Amsterdam? We could drive, but wondered about driving conditions and how long it would take. If we took a train, does anyone know a good website link that would give details of departure dates, times, length of journey and cost? Many thanks for all your advice.

Hi bowen,

Train schedules are at
http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin/quer...n?L=profi&

You can get approx prices at www.railsaver.com

The Dutch website isn't working at the moment.

I haven't traveled there but I would choose the train over driving. At least the train is very fast and it is convenient.

It would take about 3 hours to drive (mappy.com calculates it for about 2.40 hours, but these roads can get busy). On New Year's Eve, there would not be that much traffic. Trains are efficient, but I usually prefer driving myself; it's up to you what you prefer.
If you drive, you could plan a stop along the way, in Antwerp for instance. Or you could drive to Knokke, on the coast; 15 minutes or so from Brugge, it's very busy during the Christmas holidays, and all the shops there are open on Sundays too.

hi bowen

We chose to take the train. It was made easier for us to decide simply because the Amsterdam to Brugge train stopped at Schiphol Airport, our arrival point.

We enjoyed the trip to Brugge. It was relaxing and reasonably fast at a few minutes over 3 hours. If you click on my name you will find the trip report where I go into more detail about the rail journey from Amsterdam.

I drove from Amsterdam to Bruge. We stopped for the night in Delft. It was not a particularly beautiful ride. Personally, I would take the train. You won't want a car in either city.
