Amsterdam/Keukenhof Gardens

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get to Keukenhof Gardens from Amsterdam? Is is best to take a bus trip, or take a combo of train and bus? It will be in early April, if that makes any difference.
THANKS!

Organised trip: someone else takes responsibility, you're tied to their timetable
Get there under your own steam: not particularly difficult (as I recall there are regular service buses leaving from the Amstel station on the metro system, but you can easily check it out at the VVV tourist info office), but if anything does go wrong you're on your own; but you're freer - and you might feel you've lived a bit more as the Dutch do, if that's important to you.

There are frequent trains from Amsterdam to Leiden, and frequent buses from Leiden directly to Keukenhof. The bus station is right outside train station. It is very easy to go on your own.

It's be a number of years now, but we did just what JudyC suggested. Quite easy -- however, check to see when the buses directly from the station to Keukenhof actually run, esp. starting & stopping times. We discovered that the train/bus really did not get you there prior to arrival of tour buss hordes. Hopefully that has changed over the past 5 years.

We stayed in Leiden (much cheaper than Amsterdam) and bought a combo bus-entry ticket to Keukenhof at the Leiden train station. The bus leaves from just in front of the train staion - wait until you see their ocean of parked bicycles! For the most part, the buses ran every half hour during peak daylight hours. It's all very efficient. Good luck with the weather.

The train from AMS to Leiden and the Bus to the gardens are very easy to use. This way you can visit the gardens at your own pace. I think they should be listed as one of the wonders of the world. Have a grand time!

Did this last March with no car, and it works. Wear layers, though, as the gardens are lovely even in the cold.
