Susan--
I'm sure it's possible because the canal-side hotel we stayed at in April 2002, rated 4 stars, offers single rooms with shower and toilet for 100 euros (December 1 - March 15) or 105 euros (March 15 - November 30). Lavish breakfast buffet was an additional 12 euros. (The bakery at the corner opens at 7 am.)

Hotel Toren is at 164 Keizersgracht, about a block and a half away from the Ann Frank house and the Westermarkt which is a stop for several tram lines.
The hotel is charming; the staff, always pleasant and helpful; the neighborhood, quiet yet convenient. We had quite a choice of restaurants and cafes within two blocks in any direction.

www.toren.nl

Susan--
You may find some interesting places that meet your requirements by doing a search here.
Type 'Amsterdam hotels' in the text search box at the top of this column, select 'Netherlands,' then 'Find.'
I've topped one such thread for you.
Thanks to all!! Yes, I've got my maps, guidebook, internet search galore, but being completely unfamiliar with the lay-of-the-land and various districts and neighborhoods, it's been a bit trickier than usual to plan. I so appreciate all the information very much.
